Anybody ever installed a Cat ID display unit? Its not the newer Messenger version. Got a left over from my Uncle who retired from Cat. Want to put it in my IH. It has a 6 pin square Deutch connector on it. Will it plug in inside the dash somewhere?

Dont think it will, usually you have to wire it from scratch but its pretty simple anyway. you can go straight to the back of the ET connector under the dash (where a shop plugs their reader in), you need power, earth and two connunication wires which are all availble at that plug.

This 6 pin connector uses only 5 wires. Terminals 1-5 colored as follows: yellow, lt. blue, red, black, dk. blue
-
The ET connector uses a white, purple and 2 black wires

Yellow is ATA data link positive, light blue is ATA data link negative, red is battery positive, black is battery ground, purple wire is for the dimmer (does not need to be connected for the display to work). Power, ground and ATA data link are at the ET connector plug. I would need to know which plug it has to work out which wire is which as there a a couple of different ones. The power and ground wires are pretty easy to figure out with a test light but the other two can be tricky. A wiring diagram fot the truck may show you which wire is which if you have access to one.

Thanks for the info. This ET connector plug is a 6 pin round, which uses 4 wires. White, purple and 2 black wires

Wonder what those display units sell for? If it's that easy to hook-up, I'd kinda like to put one in my truck. Pricing one may kill the fever though.

I dont know how precise it is but I like having one. I always set it to show the water temp/oil pressure every time I crank the motor up. It also has a nice maintenance feature that keeps up with oil changes. Has many more features but those are the only ones I use. Recently installed new rods and mains based on what I'd been seeing from it the past couple hundred thousand miles. They were originals with 985 k miles and still ok shape but new ones got my oil pressure back up to where it used to be. Also my water temp sending unit went out a few weeks ago but no problem the cat id water temp still works... I would not like to be without one I'm really picky about my water temp never going much over 201* and could not do that without it. Also the water temp sending unit going bad like it did would have me doing unscheduled surprise fix on the road, if I did not cat id, nothing sucks more than that..
