Your communicating distances are what I'm used to in the small-hills and flat-lands terrain. They are a fraction of what guys like Rabbiporkchop are regularly reporting in other threads when they communicate with each other in certain areas of the northeast mountains. I think the line-of-sight enhancements make a big difference.

I, too find myself using the preamp on a little Italy RM 203P. It adds some significant volume to weak incoming signals when I have the RF receive knob on max and use the squelch to control background noise.

Keep us posted in your quest to find the best set-up for your rig and how the mods perform.

Just a little tidbit I highly suspect could cause an issue. I'm betting the hidden antenna will cause your SWR to be high. The factory antenna on the side of the sleeper (driver's side, which was the CB ant. in our Cascadias) made my SWR higher if I didn't take it off. The one on the passenger side didn't bother it. FWIW

23 feet per side would put you in the ballpark if you're using lmr240

As a series of pieces put together (calling it an experiment; no thing is not subject to change) the performance is FAR better than where I started.

At present, there is nothing surprising. I can hear and receive at “normal” distances.

The pre-amp can work well on occasion as a tool. Other times, no.

Thx for reminder. I think it the right idea to own one. Just hasn’t made it far enough up the list, yet. With three vehicles (all-aluminum travel trailer, diesel pickup and the latest work truck) it’s usefulness is obvious.
