That what those old motors do they smoke when they are cold you got to get them up to temperature. They have no emissions that what they do. Back in the 70 I had a shiny 290 that shot a foot long flame out the stack and a mile of pure black smoke all day and night long that the way it was. On my second fizt truck both smoke bad on start but goes away after it is warmed up you got to idle it up. Or sell it and get an emissions truck and join the tree huggers

I've got a Fitz truck, below 30° it smokes and under 15° I can fill a parking lot. Mines had a new head put on befits I bought it, so I just accept it. Once it warms up, it barely smokes at all.
Oldironfan Thanks this. -
It just seems odd you get new engine and you have exact same issue. and the exact same cylinders blow smoke when you take exhaust manifold off and start trk. Weird. Im gonna try new ecm when moneys rightOldironfan Thanks this. -
I don't have a Fitz glider but I do have a Schneider glider. 2012. It has 540 miles on it doesn't smoke at all. Uses no oil between changes, oil samples pristine.
Oldironfan Thanks this. -
Oldironfan and Elroythekid Thank this.

Just to be clear..... the cold start smoke was NOT normal. I dropped the truck at Clarke on a cold night and they could not get it to start the next morning. So that got their attention..... ended up overhauling..... 45,000 miles later zero smoking issues. Consumes 1/2 gallon of oil in 13,000 miles.... mpg are tolerable....power is tolerable.....
I’ll probably add an oil by-pass filter next PM and switch to synthetic oil & extended drain intervals. Also will tune it with a bully dog power pup.
Any one have any feed back on Syn oil in a Detroit?
I’m not too optimistic but I have had success with By-pass filtration & extended drains on a Cat.Oldironfan Thanks this. -
This is still a mystery that needs solving.
I just started a 1991 ddec 2 11.1 series 60 after sitting for 8 months 3 days ago. Cranked it a few times but no prime. So I gave it a 5 second either snort, then started it.
But that old engine had no smoke and near 70psi oil pressure when cold. It is only a 365 hp engine though. -
Just an update, I've been running Mobil Delvac the last 3 oil changes and the oil consumption had come down. I'm going through about a gal every 20,000. At 20k I do an oil change.
Terry270 Thanks this.
