Hey so my dad is giving me a truck and I was wondering if it’s worth it or should I continue my schooling. Reason I’m considering this job is pay rate is good and I’m only going to be driving 380 miles hauling garbage waste to a landfill. I should be grossing around 5800 a week. I enjoy driving and I like this job but I hear all these bad experiences which kind of drives me away ? What do you think?

I would need more details. Why is your dad giving it up? Does the truck need lots of repairs? Also, gross does not mean anything. The important part is net. Also, if you do not have cdl now you will have to get that. When you start out with no experience insurance is gonna kill you. So, I would probably stay in school. This is just my opinion. However, you should keep in mind I have been wrong a lot of times in my life time.
Epal420 Thanks this. -
Yeah I have my CDL, He’s getting a new truck, he basically fixed everything that was wrong with it and gave it to me so no problems
Mechanically, and insurance I’m gonna be paying 18,000 a year. I should be netting in like 2k a week after expenses -
I'd finish my schooling and drive on the side. That way I have something to fall back on other than driving a truck. If your career doesn't work out, then you can always drive a truck.
just_sayin, Diesel Dave, Pedigreed Bulldog and 1 other person Thank this. -
But is trucking as bad as it seems? everybody seems to hate the pay but I think 2.60$ per mile or 490$ per round trip 380 miles is a decent pay
-
That is up to. How long will it last, what happens if you no longer have an hyperbole truck?
How does the pay compare to your chosen career field? -
Talking to my dad he told me there’s about 5 years left on it. My career would be a Chicagoland police officer starting at probably 54k a year.

With a pension.

This.
Trucking is great...until it isn't. New regulations, stepped up enforcement, lack of respect from pretty much everybody you meet, etc...
...and you'd better stay in school. $2.60/mile for 380 miles is $988. $480 per trip is only $1.29/mile.
A truck will last for as long as you want it to, providing it is properly maintained and you continue to repair whatever breaks. If you're only making $1.29/mile, though, the truck will absolutely have an expiration date, because when more expensive repairs come due (engine overhaul, for example), you simply won't be able to afford to do it. -
Sorry I didn’t properly word my sentence 380 miles daily and 190 per round trip.
