Trucking isn't for everyone. It's better for the ones that want to be out here and not the ones that have to be. Over 50% of the drivers would leave the industry if they could.

I knew someone that was a firefighter and drive truck locally on his days off. Yes, an O/O, but that was like 30 years ago. Lost contact with him.
Epal420 Thanks this. -
First off this wouldn’t be a “job”, you would be running a business. Your business. And think of the huge benefit you would have if your father is mechanicaly inclined and could show and teach you things, about the the truck and about the industry. You start off with a direct contract/ shipper, staying close to home base. THATS NICE! That’s what a lot of us guys wish we had family to show us the ropes.
Just something to think about...
Good luck -
You also said that you'd be netting $2,000 a week. Is that after expenses or after expenses and self employment taxes?
-
Hold on, so is it $490 a day... that would be like $3000 a week if you took a day off
But earlier did you say $5800 a week gross? ... big difference -
I would be doing 2 trips everyday and 1 or 2 on Saturday depending if I can make the double trip to the landfill as they close way earlier on saturdays then other days of the week
-
Yes
I’m not sure how to calculate self employment taxes would that be after all your expenses or calculate it from your gross earnings ? -
After your expenses. Your profit.
Doesn't your father know the tax situation.
If you don't know.
Hire an account to help you do your taxes. Mistakes are expensive.
Good luck. -
How did you get from $5,800 a week gross to $2,000 a week net if you're getting a truck that's paid for. Even with high insurance and all other expenses including fuel, you should be netting out $3 to $4k a week, and that's doing better than 95% of drivers in the business. That's also better than you'll do in law enforcement for many years, and you'll be making enough to set up your own pension plan.
