You can still logbook speed (and now they have GPS marked locations to run the numbers with), not show enough on-duty time for work outside the truck (pre-trip still needs to be 15 minutes, loading and unloading needs to be marked on-duty, etc), forget any inspection details that are required by law (any equipment that isn't functioning properly needs to be marked with an appropriate code) and obviously you can still drive in violation and it'll record it in plain sight for the DOT to see.
There's plenty for them to get after drivers for, and elogs just make it easier for them to find the problems. Elogs make running legal easier, by automating the record-keeping, but for those unable to grasp the systems, or those unwilling to do things legally, they'll just be getting tickets faster now.Lepton1 Thanks this. -
There is absolute no requirement saying that a pretrip must take 15 minutes. I can pre trip my truck and trailer in 2 minutes if i hustle and i never take more than 5. I show exactly the amount of time it takes me and have never had it questioned by any officer in over 20 years.Dave_in_AZ and Lepton1 Thank this.

You must have never found those officers who are brand new and sifting through their chart looking for problems. I usually take 6-7 minutes for a full walk around and look under the hood. 10 if I do a six-pack on the auto adjusters first thing in the morning.
Most companies say 15 minutes minimum because that's about the average time it takes to check everything on the list that needs checking (which is in the law). If an officer has never given you a funny look for a 2 minute pre-trip, checking all your air systems, brakes and other components, then I say you got really lucky for 20 years and should quit now and buy a bunch of lotto. -
No, the reason the minimum was 15 minutes was because on paper that was the minimum increment of time. (it's either 0 or 15 minutes) on Elogs it takes what it takes.
Plus it's stupid. I come out to truck, open hood, check under hood, close up hood, get inside, START TRUCK. Ohhhh, now the stupid slow ### windows based elogs start booting up. Do more walk around, come back to truck cab. Nope, still not booted up. Run the air brake test, ohhhhhhh, there we go, it's finally ready. let me log in <log in> retrieving logs (another minute or two). Ok, now change to on duty. too bad i've been done with the pretrip for 2 minutes now.
Never had an issue. I go on duty as soon as the slow thing comes up and lets me, but obviously ti's been more than a few minutes when i started. Same thing with the post trip. i'm not stepping out of the truck without logging off (otherwise you forget, DAMHIK). so it's only going to show a few minutes for post trip on duty, but clearly I still have on duty time. Fill out DVIR (if needed), turn in paperwork and keys, etc. all of which is technically on duty but can't be shown.Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -

You only need to flag a pretrip or post trip on paper logs. Companies may require more than DOT requirements. I have worked for companies that only require flagging inspections and I have worked for companies that require 15 minute pretrips and 30 minute post trips.
spyder7723 and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -
Teamsters was 18 minutes split. 6 pre, 12 post. On the clock.Lepton1 Thanks this.
