Agreed. You owe him nothing. Don’t abandon equipment. Take pictures of the equipment and paperwork, for future reference. If your record is clean, you should have no problem getting on with a decent carrier.
Oh, and once you leave, do your fellow drivers a favour, and let the dot know how bad the equipment is, and they need to do a fleet fitness inspection.
Boss has me driving a death trap.

DOCUMENT IT ON PAPER DATES< TIMES< NAME NAMES< be exact. Go visit your Dept of Labor first. (Unemployment office) then the FMCSA QUIETLY.
There are ANTI CORECTION LAWS in effect to protect you. In fact maybe even whistle blower.
Let me tell you something one time Kind Sir, when a boss makes veiled or outright threats quit.
Never mind the money, bills etc. That is why you document everything on paper or better yet have a phone quietly recording in your pocket your boss threatening you on tape. BOOM done.
Document everything the matter with that truck assigned to you. If the transmission is fixing to come out of that rig as a solid unit and kill a family behind you then that's REALLY bad and frankly UNACCEPTABLE.
I had a tractor which cab and floor fell down under me leaving me feet hanging near the drivesahaft at 70+ and wondering how interesting my pending death would be under those drive axles waiting to gobble me up. It fell over a foot from the rest of the cab. (Hundreds of rivets all finally unzipped on the old 30)
When My boss made threats to my face not for cause out of anger that I dare do things my way before beginning the workday on time with him and one other worker I quit. No one threatens me.
Even in the auction house I had two dealers who were 21 and fresh with new dealer licenses with a vehicle they did not think that temps were worth anything. I parked their car in the salvage area and clocked out then and there. I was angry enough to deck both of them which would have gotten me arrested. So I clocked out and went home. A week later I saw them again and they had forgotten. So it matters not.
Anyway.
Your story is bad. It should never have gotten to this point. Your owner, the company is literally dead, a rotting corpse waiting to be put out of business by DOT order or a batch of OOS catching at scales with YOU the fall guy.
Don't be stupid. Get out of there. Enough is enough.
Piss on the money troubles. We all have that and if things go a certain way YOU might come out way ahead yourself.
There is a old saying two for you. First Class Attracts Class. Second A Eagle cannot soar with turkeys.
I cannot stand hauling crappy food into Associated Grocers and be treated or abused really badly. But I absolutely get treated very well with good equiptment hauling medicines worth a million. Follow me? I soar. Im not trapped with the turkeys.
\Maybe I am the turkey and too stupid to know it. HA. But Im past that.
Get clear, it's coming down around you. Don't get trapped in it.cybill234, Odin's Rabid Dog, rolls canardly and 2 others Thank this. -
Now that is sad , so he supplies you with the crappy truck then your threatened with a bad reference/ referral, i'd try and take as many pics as possible gather as much evidence as possible so you can support your case keep a daily dairy write down all the faults and when you reported them to your boss or to the mechanics and what action was taken, get someone (an independent ) mechanic to vouch for your story of mechanical issues, as the saying goes "its not what you know its what you can prove."rolls canardly and JReding Thank this.

You need to do more than just right it down
There are plenty of apps for your phone that capture voice and video. Indian is also a one party consent state when it comes to recording telephone conversations. -
It must not be in too bad of shape mechanically if it passed a level 1 and got a CVSA sticker recently.Lepton1 Thanks this.
