When the law was changed it was not well publicized. To this day I still have people asking me how I get away with my long WB truck, not knowing the law was changed years ago.BigHossVolvo Thanks this.
-
This is true, except the wheelbase of the trailer/trailers being pulled by such a longer wb tractor (over244") must be reduced accordingly. There is a complicated formula/table which is part of the change which mandates the maximun trailer wheelbase allowed when the tractor is over 244". It is doubtful many drivers are aware of this technicality, let alone understand how to be in compliance...BigHossVolvo Thanks this.

Formula isn't that complicated really....
As truck wb increases so much trailer wheelbase by an equal amount. And still can't exceed 23m total length. Seems relatively simple to me.
Do the western provinces still require permits for over 244" + 53'? -
You are correct on the wb reduction. in theory all a driver would have to do would be take the amount his tractor is over the magic 244" and move his trailer tandems or tridems forward from the 41' Canadian standard. This would work on flats, vans, reefers, anything with sliders on the trailer axles. And the 23m overall length limitation would be the final check.
Unknown which Western provinces require a permit at this time. A phone call to Central Permits office in each province would provide that info for anyone thinking of running a longer wb tractot west of the On/Mb. border. -
When did they change that? I have current over WB permits from both MB and SK in my binder. No charge for the SK permit, and I believe the MB permit was $20.
-
I'm not sure about that.I still have the Alberta permit but never received one for SK and MB this year so I assumed it was no longer required.I could be wrong on that.
-
I'll find out when I call to renew my Sask permit I suppose. My MB is good til later this summer.

A friend bought a Pete 3 years ago to pull a set of rtac michigan trains. He went 260" wheelbase. There's a permit to allow genset equipped trucks to be longer than 244". He did not have to actually buy a generator but had to pay for the permit. I think it was 400 dollars. He was under the impression that it was an annual permit. When they inquired about it at the start of the second year he was told he was good to go Who knows how government works lol 400 dollar cash grab imo.
I live not too far from scotlyn. Lots of eye rolls and stories whenever their name comes up. Doesn't matter if its a 20year driver or a 70 year farmer that dealt with them. Always a story. I thought about hauling flowers for them years ago with my own reefer. Changed my mind after reading a 20 page contract that guaranteed that l would owe them a minimum of 2 grand when l decided to leave regardless of whether l did everything by the book. No thanks. I have bought parts from their in house Pete dealership though lol. More "poor farmers" lol ;(Last edited: Apr 22, 2018
