cummings calls it something and it on or off no stage. I recall something to the effect of an exhaust valve. open or closed to put back pressure on the exhaust side, It was located just past the exhaust manifold on the exhaust pipe, and before the fire wall. Same results as a Jake brake sort of, I don't recall it working as well as a jake but it works...

Without looking at your truck. I couldn't tell you for sure.
There are at least 3 other "systems" out there.
One even mounts in the drive line behind the tranny, 2 if you count retarders. -
hey thanks! ill look for it in the morning. sounds like the exhaust brake on my pickup.
-
i see! this one sounds just like a jake but with less retarding power than the other trucks. thanks for the comments guys!

Cummins uses a variety depending on customer request. The engine brakes can be controlled by one, two, or three solenoids, just depends on the switch in the dash. Most cummins has all the wiring to be a 3 stage...
Most medium duty engines like the ISC, ISB, and ISL may have an exhaust brake....usually made by Paccar even if its not in a KW or Pete. Or here's something screwy, the new '07 Volvo engines have a boost discharge valve. They used to have a very large exhaust brake but since the aftertreatment...
Oh that reminds me, a heads up to any of you Volvo guys. Volvo always installs the exhaust brake on every engine (pre '07 and non-day cab) and the wiring for it. The only thing is missing is the switch in the dash. Don't pay hundreds for dealership to do it...the connector will be marked in the dash. Just buy the switch and hook up
The Challenger Thanks this. -
Ain't that illegal to do that if you are company driver? Also, if its not, would the shop do it for you?

My last company had some mid-90's CH model macks that were like that. They were called "Stealth Jake Breaks", sounded like you had a real bad airleak lol. They were 2 stage though, Hi was stealth and low sounded like a weak regular jake.

Not illegal at all. Its just Volvo's way of charging you more. If you have the knowledge, there's nothing they can do about it... you already bought the truck.
