Excellent question.
First of all, it was a marginal victory for the Brexit supporters. The Remain voters were suppose to win, so many of them didn't turn up to vote. When you think of November 2016, something similar happened in the US. Most Brexit voters are old people who grew up in the time of the empire, and still think Britain is a very powerful nation. And of course there were the uneducated who believed all the BS that was told them by certain newspapers and politicians. The young and the well educated didn't want Brexit.
Most Brexit politicians are stupid fools who have no idea how the EU works, and they have also no idea how Brexit must take shape. The EU negotiators are often stunned by their total lack of knowledge. The British civil servants know all to well what is going on, and what the consequences of this stupidity are. There is a special Brexit ministry with the most capable British civil servants, almost all Remainers.
There are many possible Brexit scenarios, and there is absolutely no agreement among the Brexiteers which scenario to choose.
A nice example is the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. If the UK doesn't want a custom union with the EU as the UK government wants, the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland has to be closed. However, the Good Friday agreement says the border has to be open. So the border has to be open and closed at the same time, a trifle difficult. The UK government has no idea how to solve this problem.
The House of Lords just voted in favour of a customs union, and now the House of Commons has to vote on the issue again. If the government looses that vote, Ms. May will face an enormous problem, maybe even new elections. She already lost the last one, and it's very likely she will loose even more this time, and that could bring Labour in power.
In short, the UK is in a hopeless mess, and if you think Brexit is a glorious way to new independence, you are very, very wrong.
P.S.
In case you want to know what a customs union is, it means goods can be transported over the border without customs looking at them. That means two things: First all goods must comply to EU rules, the EU will make these rules, and the UK has no say in the process. The same applies to trade deals, the UK just has to follow the EU, and has no say in the deals. I heard one Brexiteer say that this could only happen if the UK would also be on the negotiating table if let's say the EU and China make a new deal. I couldn't stop laughing for 5 minutes, what a fool.Last edited: Apr 27, 2018

What a snotty post. Is everyone that disagrees with you an idiot? Might surprise you to know there are plenty of pointy headed intellectual types who don't agree with you that Brexit is a bad thing. These big supranational entities lording over nations aren't really the end all be all for everyone. It's very sensible IMO for the British people prefering to control their own national affairs instead of ceding that authority to a bunch of unaccountable foreign beauracrats in Brussels.

No, but I've known these particular politicians for a few decades by now, and I never had a high opinion of them. Nigel Farrage is the worst of them. Against everything the EU stands for, except for his pension. Boris Johnson actually was a Remainer, but he thought that if the Brexit voters would win, he could become prime minister. So he changed sides, out of his personal interests. Great guy don't you think?
All decisions on policy in the EU are made unanimously by ministers of the EU countries. The idea that the EU 'bureaucracy' is doing things on its own and is unaccountable is preposterous. Furthermore there is a EU parliament, and its members can be quite difficult for the European Commission as well.
I once heard a Brexit voter say that Winston Churchill would be looking down on them with pride. Luckily this British giant was far more intelligent than the brexiteers. Listen to what he said in 1946 !!!
