6nz Jake question

    Im chasing a slight noise in valvetrain on my 6nz that’s either a rocker arm or a injector. I can hear it when under throttle and and it goes away instantly when I let off the accelerator. I can also hear it when using the Jake but only on stage 3. Don’t hear it at all on stage 1 or 2. What cylinders are engaged on stage 1, stage 2 and stage 3? Just trying to figure out if noise is coming from cylinders 1 & 2, 3 & 4 or 5 & 6. I’ve googled a good bit and can’t find the answer to this.

    Stage one is center Jake. Stage two is front and rear Jake's. Stage 3 is all of them. Sure you don't have exhaust or air to air leak?

    Not an exhaust leak and air to air is good. I’m about to pull what little hair I have left out chasing this noise. I’m almost certain it’s in the valve train. I’ll look at air to air more tomorrow.

    Old school stethoscope helps find the noises. I had one were it was making a guy pull out his hair and it ended up being loose hose end on aeroquip hose for boost gauge. Had the tick sound of a valve.

    I’ve been all over it with a stethoscope for the last couple of weeks. Just havn’t been able to pinpoint anything yet. Was hoping the question I asked about the Jakes would help me narrow it down to one rocker shaft but your answer blew that line of thinking out of the water.

    Sounds boost related/turbo drive pressure related. Can you hear it if you rev it up and let engine brakes hit? Don't forget to check supply hose to air compressor and intake manifold pipe gasket.

    Still sounds like an exhaust leak to me.
    They can sound exaclly like your describing.

    How can you be so sure it's not?

    Generally an valvetrain tick dont come and go.

    I agree that it would make more sense that it was an exhaust leak. If it is I’ve not found it yet and I’ve been all over it looking. What I’m hearing is more of a mechanical sound that comes and goes with the throttle.

    Not a broken spring. I’ve already checked for that. In the last month I’ve replaced head, cam, 2 injectors and to injector rockers. Cam had started flaking on number five injector lobe and also on the rocker roller. Noise still there after that. Suspected a valve making noise after cam swap and pulled head. Some valves had wear so I went ahead and put a reman head on. Still got the noise. Number 4 injector is a little louder than the rest listening thru a stethoscope. I don’t mind replacing injector but hate to if that’s not my problem. I checked all injector springs while I had them out doing head swap.
