having hauled some oversize loads i'll say this much, NEVER DEVIATE FROM THE PERMIT ROUTE!!! OUCH!!! ...and.... just outta curiosity... i wonder who his dispatcher thought they were by routing him like that?? most states have DOT websites that post info regularly on lane closures etc... but when it comes to permits YOU CANT DEVIATE.
and... guys..... heres a really fantastic website (not bad for gov't work) to keep on hand!!!
http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/trafficinfo/index.htm
(nat'l traffic and road closure website from the FHWA)
forum moderators, i know its a link, but its a very very helpful link im sure nobody would complain about!!! this site is as as useful as our map books!!!broncrider and Hammer166 Thank this. -
If The dispatcher put him own this route why would he get the fine? If not not the guy should deffinately lose his job.
-
from a law enforcement standpoint... regardless of what his dispatch told him... in the end, he turned off of the permitted route.. (and i know alotta DOT guys that would say the same thing) ultimately, everything we do in these trucks is our resposibility, if we knowingly violate a regulation, its our butts

Just like to know why its not listed a restricted route and why was the route planner not aware of this and warned the driver. Many companies are just about saving miles not driver safety. Come on you guys let's get these drivers to the shippers safely.

WARNING to newbies:
At some point if you drive long enuf and 'survive,' you will have to back a long distance out of a bad situation---hopefully not 4 miles!!
My worst was 2 city blocks, with cars parked on both sides, thru an L.A. residential area, at night due to bad directions!! I got MS Streets & Trips shortly thereafter....
Forgot to add: "Newbies, never ever, ever, never, ever, PANIC!! Keep your cool and no matter how long it takes (and who's watching!) just take your time and back out of it.....PANIC is your worst enemy OTR!
**** These words are the best advice I could give a new driver.....Last edited: Jan 11, 2009

The State of Illinois was initially responsible for issuing the permits across the I-64 bridge. When the trucker's "dispatch" re-routed him, THEY became responsible.
What the driver SHOULD have done is contact the ISSUING STATE and request they re-issue the permits, OR wait until the crew was completed with their inspection. He might have lost a day, but that is far cheaper than $30k in fines. -
NO........!
REALLY? -
I remember one year I had to back DOWN HILL PA 924 to Girard Manor AT NIGHT during the Feb. blizzard of 1996.
I don't remember how far I backed up, but the only place to park and wait out the storm was a bar parking-lot. Got 2 inches of freezing rain on top of 2 feet of snow and I was stuck for a day and a half.
