A used truck in the sweet spot of depreciated value versus service life is a very sensible choice. Not $10-15k unless you’re eight months out of school and just gotta have a truck, but $35-40k perhaps. With under 500k miles if it’s a DEF truck.
Take your savings over brand new and put it in the slush fund. Save your dollars, use your $35k rig for a couple years, then trade up to a glider - used naturally.

With a few days of searching i could find a dozen good ready to work trucks for under 15k. Sure they won't be a shined up pretty large car, but they will get freight across the country without breaking down and leaving you waiting on a wrecker.Truckermania, Hurst and LateNightCable Thank this.
-
Been their done that but with the trucks that you will find for those price tags wouldn't make it for six months over the road unless u are Putting a lot of money in them
Samuelh and Hegemeister Thank this. -
And that isn't to say their aren't great trucks out their but u might find one that's been overhauled and the owners want a lot of money for their next project truck
-
Again i can find a dozen for that price tag if i take a few days to look and check them out. Sure you got to shift through a ton of junk to find them, but they are out there.Hurst Thanks this. -
Ok you are getting closer. See the thing is a 15 year old columbia, century, t600 etc is only worth 10 to 15k. doesn't matter if it has two million miles on the engine or if it has 50k miles on a remanned engine and brand spanking new transmission with 90%rubber, just had the suspension rebushed with new kingpins. It's only worth what the market will bear and when you got cash in hand and are willing to be patient you can find a good truck for very little money. The reason is rather simple, no one is financing a 15 year od truck. It isn't going to happen. So the seller has a choice, take a cash offer or plant flowers in it.Truckermania, TheyCallMeDave, Hurst and 1 other person Thank this.

That is very true

To be honest if I could have bought a few trucks for what one new cost today but the problem we have is a lot of brokers that we run for required a 2010 or newer truck they won't load you if they see a 90's Pete pull in or a kw
-
Are those loads going into California or newark port? If so the broker has a right to know if my truck is new enough to be carb compliant therefore legal to go. If not it's non of his business. Move on to the next incoming call from a broker begging you to take his load. Capacity is so tight now that you could load a horse drawn wagon for 4 bucks a mile.

I’ve never had a broker ask me what year my truck is.Hurst and spyder7723 Thank this.
