Two bad trucks both because of the motors of that era . especially paccar.
In addition to that your hubby is the one that's going to be stuck in it for however long.
Obviously you mean well but he's the one that needs to pick out the truck.

I wouldn't get any truck without running a dyno and blowby test. And an ecm dump and oil analysis. Then find a mechanic you can trust and have it gone over with a fine tooth comb. If the company you are buying from won't let you do this then run away. Fast

You beat me to it.
Here is a story for the OP.
I was offered two trucks last week which the owner is over their head.
He and his partner (his better half) decided to run two trucks independent hauling containers for CP out of Detroit so they went out and bought the first trucks they saw.
No dyno, no nothing, just took a quick test drive and handed over a $40k check for both. They were junk to begin with and the one took a crap on the first time out while the other drank so much oil, they had to stop every three hours and throw in a couple gallons in.
The first one is sitting in the shop waiting for some money to do an In-frame and other things. The other is just crapping all over itself with oil.
Well I got a call from someone who knows these two and she talked me into seeing if I can help. I went and looked at them, first stop was the shop and they handed me an estimate of $35k to rebuild everything that was wrong with it. When I took a look at the other and had seen it, there is no way I would consider buying them for more than $3k a piece and then I would just scrap them out.
Now you don't have to believe me OP, but this is normal in this world, we just don't see people post it on forums because it is embarrassing.Oldironfan, PoleCrusher, Oxbow and 2 others Thank this. -
I've thought about buying a truck at some point, but after hours and hours of research I've come to realize there is a LOT that goes into buying a truck. That story is a real bummer and unfortunately I'm sure it happens all too often. I'd never make such a purchase without making #### sure the truck I'm buying is in appropriate shape, and I have the necessary funds on hand in the event something unforeseen comes about.

Don’t buy a paccar. I drive one now and if he’s running mountains he better have some great brakes on there because that engine brake ain’t ####.
Surprise him by taking him to buy a truck. Go with a Cummins or a cat on the engine and an APU is nice but definitely check hours on the engine and the APU.grizzlyfreight Thanks this. -
I agree it is best to take him as a surprise since he would have more knowledge about the trucks. I also heard great things about the DD15 motors!RedRover Thanks this.

ALSO, for 40k you can buy a pre emissions Peterbilt with an ELD exemption and a platinum overhaul on the cat motor. You may pay 50-60 for it, but it’s been babied no doubt. Fleets regularly do PM and that sort of thing, but they follow a schedule that is only good for a truck you don’t plan on keeping for a million miles. When I had my truck I was getting everything greased at 12,000 miles and the oil changed at 15-18k. I was planning to keep it. A fleet may do the PM anywhere from 30-70k.

While I admire your desire to surprise him with a truck...
Its kinda like him buying you a pair of shoes....
I'm sure you'd rather he just surprise you with the money & say; "Honey here's $100. Go buy yourself a new pair of shoes."
You get the pleasure that he was thinking of you, pleasure that you get to go shopping for a new pair of shoes & pleasure that you got something you'll enjoy in your taste, style & comfort.
Surprise him with the money.... he'll appreciate it more than giving him the truck itself.TheyCallMeDave Thanks this. -
The problem with that RedRover is most guys buying a truck these days don't have a pot to pee in. Thy want somebody to lend them 95% of the money and wonder why thy can't get a loan. I'm selling my 06 Columbia right now and you should here some of the wing dings calling me, that if you can understand the language.
RedRover and TheyCallMeDave Thank this. -
Both of those engines are up for inframes at that mileage.
PACCAR MX-13 and Cummins ISX15 are garbage.
10 speeds are garbage too.
Look for a 13 speed or a 9 speed that's convertible to a 13 speed transmission.
Look for a Pre-Emission truck.
Better yet, stay a company driver, less headaches and you get benefits.RedRover and bryan21384 Thank this.
