Is it better to pay out of pocket for school or go through one of the employment based CDL programs?
Which companies are the best to start with if you pay for your pwn school?
Which do you think are the best to go with if you are going to go through their CDL program?
Looking for input from the Experienced drivers

In my opinion, it’s ALWAYS best to pay for your own license/school.
That way you’re not under contract with someone who doesn’t care about the money you make.
Company wise, well what do you want to do?
There’s no magic company out there that’s right for everybody.
It’s all about what YOU want, what you need and what you can live with.AfterShock, Redtruckerusa, QuietStorm and 4 others Thank this. -
Kindergarten is kindergarten. Either way you pay. I indebted myself to the promise of repayment. I left and paid the rest. My credit score thanked me AND my self respect didn't change me.

It's better to pay yourself. Some companies have tuition repayment plans, but you only get $100 or so a month.

I am nervous owing a company a year and not being able to leave if you're not getting miles. I want to bring my dog with me, gain experience, and have miles available. Any advice? I was considering Werner after school, but then read a lot about people not getting miles. Any secrets to getting miles?LGarrison and AfterShock Thank this.

Secret to getting miles? Well, that’s 2 fold. 1. You gotta maximize your clock as much as possible. Don’t jerk around jaw jacking in truck stops. Get your load, get on the road and go.
2. Is having miles to run. If the company isn’t giving you miles, you can’t very well run them can you?
Most major companies have a pet policy and will let you take them. Some have breed and/or weight restrictions.

The secret to getting miles is to be available with hours and if you don't get the miles to move on. There is a need for MOTIVATED drivers. Like I posted earlier. Get wet, then learn to swim. Use them like they use you. I started making a few hundred a week. Now I make over a thousand and drive less miles. 6 months clean and you'll pay the note easier. Don't sell your soul to the company. Sell it to a creditor. worst case, you settle with the collection agency pennies on the dollar.

I try to get everything I could need BEFORE I start unless I’m parked in the middle of nowhere.
Carton of smokes, snacks and drinks, that’s about it. Normally stopping for fuel, maybe the bathroom and 30 minute break.
Trucking is a hands on job and the only way to truly learn it is to do it.AfterShock and Back2truckin Thank this. -
When you say what do I want to do, you mean what I want to pull. I don't think I want to do flatbed. I was thinking about Dry Van or reefer. I don't mind running. I am not a big talker.
You're part 2 is the biggest fear. Not being given any to run. If they're available I will take them. That is kind of what I am trying to learn and figure out.AfterShock Thanks this. -
Definitely motivated. Thinking after I gain experience I'd like to go into one of the lease programs or owner/operator. Is that what you do?AfterShock Thanks this.
