If this has happened to you please name the company so others might learn to go elsewhere for employment.

actually, doesn't it all come down to...good companies DO NOT ADVERTISE?

it's usually ALWAYS word of mouth, that the GOOD jobs are found? right?

i think this is where "networking" comes into play.

but, everyone has to start someplace, no one can be fully vetted with friends of friends for help.

It's been a few years since I had to attend an actual orientation(you know "word of mouth" and all that),but I NEVER left my house headed to said orientation without a plan/means to get my butt back home should things go sideways(never had to utilize them)..............I do recall numbers dwindling as the "class" progressed, you just chalk it up as people not making the cut.

You are told to wear jeans, boots, and a long sleeve shirt.

You show up in basketball shorts, sneakers, and a short sleeve shirt that says "no fat chicks".

Do I really want to hire you?

If I can smell you from across the room, do I want to put you in one of my trucks?

The company should pay for a bus ticket home, but we have had several cases where the individual does not use the ticket provided, then blames us.

I was with Millis Transfer ... they appear to have just closed the school
right in the middle of training group ( this was years ago ) and just told the
    them to go home

    Go figure

When I was in orientation at Swift (the only place I've work with a classroom orientation. Everywhere else was just paperwork) there was about 10 in our class. The instructor made a comment that 25 bus tickets were given out.
Why should the company spend the money for a background check before the person shows up in those cases? Just a waste of money. Also why should the company be responsible to send the potential employee home for stuff like failing a drug test, or "forgetting" to put the vehicular manslaughter case on the list of convicted crimes on the application?

Now if the errors are minor (forgot a 3 month job 8 years ago) or something like that and they say goodbye then yes, they are being unreasonable. In my (rather limited, I admit) experience though most people deserve to have to find their way home. Remember those 10 that actually showed up? Well 3 didn't even show up for the drug test, and one was walked out the next day for some reason (bad piss test) .

I have let drivers go during orientation for:
    Failed drug screen
Failed background check (one got arrested for an outstanding warrant at lunch)
    Failed road test
    Theft from the hotel
Yes, people do earn the right to pay for their own way home all the time. Stop the victim card, ain't got time for that.

I got stranded in Nashville, TN by a certain carrier of unseemly reputation for "lack of recent experience" DESPITE the fact that I:

    A) listed all my previous driving jobs with ACCURATE dates.

    B) passed ALL the driving and written tests with flying colors.

    C) Not only passed all the securement tests 100%, but was asked by the orientation staff to help my classmates to pass the tests as well

And finally D) had already previously acknowledged the time since my previous "verified" driving job with the recruiting staff, the orientation staff, AND the safety staff. I had also offered to take a "student driver" position, an offer the carrier had accepted.

Long story short, I and three others were taken aside on the very last day of orientation (while we we're awaiting truck and trainer assignments) and told we did not qualify. But the brand new rookie who almost rolled the truck during his driving test got to stay.

They were very gracious about it. After all, they spent the gas money to take all four of us to the glory that is the Nashville, TN greyhound station. And left us there.

That was the last time I EVER left myself at the mercy of some scum sucking carrier. I learned my lesson that day. Now, I maintain a "Go #### yourselves" fund. I can get myself and all of my stuff home from absolutely anywhere in the country. And be in a different colored truck, stealing all your customers, a week later.

Don't mess with me. I'm a highly experienced, well trained driver with additional dispatch, load planning, and sales experience. Other than Safety, I can operate in any department of a carrier very successfully. I am a mega carrier's worst ######### nightmare. A driver who knows the industry from BOTH sides of the desk!

i too always carry a credit card, and i fly home, in a few short hours.

but, i vowed to NEVER go to an out of state orientation ever again.

one company that did hire me for a regional job here, the boss said i HAD TO GO to orientation in Ohio.

i made no argument out of it, i told him, "i can go home now, or go to work...NOW...."

he made a call, i went to work that night.

(of course, this was after the pre-employment drug test, and the road test.)

no orientation for this old man either.
