One idea the team has come up with in response to the truck parking issue is to require warehouse operators to open enough bays to accommodate all their own trucks, while simultaneously setting aside free parking space for any trucks that may be heading to a nearby facility and need a place to stay.

Well that's bs. I know a lot of OTR guys think any place a truck fits is their property for the night, but come on.
Requiring a company to set aside parking for themselves and even a little bit more for future expansion is fine. Requiring to provide parking for anyone up to and including their competitors. No way!

Unless the land is owned by the city, the city has no right to force someone to allow a 3rd party to use their land.

Maybe the mayor can have a couple reefer trucks park in his back yard.

So it is wrong to make Amazon provide some parking room for trucks delivering to them.
I am quite sure it would put a financial hardship on Amazon to add 30 parking spaces

That's not what he said. He want Amazon to provide parking to anyone, including say Wal-Mart. Or any of their other competitors.

CEVA in Mt. Juliet, Tn has an area for bobtails that are waiting for trailers to be loaded. They take your phone number and call when ready. You can stay or run down the street for eats.

As a Amazon shareholder I will be quite vocal about adding facilities beyond a single outhouse

I've thought about the parking issue and have merely concluded that any attempt to solve it by laying down more concrete will only increase the amount of space that gets completely filled up with cheap freight.

If I ever get around to appointing myself to the office of "dictator", I would probably try to ease the government out of the "free overnight parking" business, look for ways to dissuade large carriers from expecting employees work 24/7 on jobs that really should be relayed, and require all carriers/operators/shippers to make parking arrangements [for anything larger than an ambulance] prior to departure for all non-local trips (or at least prior to departing the current parking spot).

    BillStep and Jazz1 Thank this.
