Run time and sleep

I mostly drove nights when I hauled reefer. Though, obviously that’s subject to change due to appointment scheduling.

 

When I used to pull reefer. I sleep at night for the most part. I did long haul reefer 1,800+ mile trip. That's why I liked driving cross country. I see some companies do short haul reefer. Driver have run all night. K&B is kinda famous for that, they pay really good but run their trucks all night.

I have read stories of drivers sleeping all night. Then are told to get ready to sleep all day(like you can actually sleep 18 hours) because they have an overnight run for you. I guess that why they pay better. That's why I did long haul stuff. If I wanted to drive all night I work for FedEx or UPS.

 

Whenever I can. When I was at the customers I always slept while loading and un-loading and when I was on break.

 

I was reefer and drove 95% of the time during the day. The only time I drove at night was when I had an off hours load or unload. I usually woke up at 4 am, on the road by 5, and shut down in real parking spot by 4 pm at the latest.

 

It would depend upon the trucking company and appointment times of the customer.

The longer the average length of haul for a given carrier, the more ability you will have to run your preferred hours and be flexible to better manage time around major metro traffic areas.

But in the reefer side, you have to expect to do some running outside of your preferred style, here and there.

 

In my experience, produce loads always kept me driving at night with odd pick up and delivery times so I avoided them. Most frozen food loads picked up during the day and delivered first thing in the morning, so no night driving.

I will never drive a produce load again unless it paid some crazy high amount. I know there are guys who love them, but I'm not a night owl, and I absolutely hate the long wait times and dealing with lumpers.

When i was pulling reefer many years ago. I ran during the daytime. If i were under a hot load, than i would drive all day, and night. No i have no tickets, accidents, or even came close before those butt kissing, nay-sayers start their demeaning us drivers that did our jobs, and knew our limits, and were good at our jobs.
