Hey fellas & ladies
I just recently started trucking after selling my 07 Columbia 2 years back
Now I feel like buying my own rig again BUT problem is I moved from NYC to Cali & we all know about the 2007 & under trucks not allowed in Cali
Now I'm not too familiar with the newer DEF/DPF/Computer technology but I've heard that there a nightmare.
Now I got friends telling me that these trucks are unreliable and are more in the shop bay then the road & that just the def rebuilt can cost up to 20k 30k $$
Is it a wise idea to buy a 2016 KW 680 w/ a Cummins motor ?
I've had ppl advise me to buy a tractor with a Detroit DD15 but I don't want a frieghtliner I want a KW or a Pete & these tru is dont come with the Detroit motors
What are my options ?
Is it true these new emission used trucks are duds?
Is it worth buying a used 2013+ truck? Is it true there all lemons ? HELP

When it comes to new trucks, the X15 Cummins might be a game changer. It’s still early on to tell. EGR + DPF + DEF is all just a big roadblock for you motor to disperse its exhaust. Then the egr valvue literally recirculates exhaust and uses it as “fresh intake”. This is what it’s all about. Hot exhaust mixes with oil and creates soot. Soot creates friction within the cylinder head and beyond via cams, valves, main n rod bearings etc. this added friction usually equates to diminished engine life.“Doc”, Lepton1, Oldironfan and 2 others Thank this.

Ask them for a real warranty that covers electrical and see what happens.Oldironfan Thanks this.

We just ordered new trucks. The old ones are 2013 and 2014 Kenworth 680’s. Cummins and autos. One is a 13spd. They are between 425k to 500k miles. Owner was a die hard Cummins fan till these trucks. He ordered Pacar motors in the new ones. Dealer didn’t want to give us $30k each for them. One has had a NEW motor already. Spent almost 2x in maintince last year than a NEW payment would have been. Not just emissions but everything. They have all been towed at least 2 times last year.
We wound up getting $40k each for trade but had to commit to trading out the whole fleet. 4 trucks.KB3MMX, x1Heavy, driverdriver and 1 other person Thank this. -
Its a shame too. I drove a 2012 T680 and thought it was the best driving truck I had been in. Only had 73k miles though. Got 8.1 mpg w/auto.

I have 2016 t680 Cummins with 375k miles that I bought brand new. only been down for engine harness for 3 days. The cost for maintenance for last three years was .05 mile. I am going to trade October for cascadia I order. I believe if you don't idle and take care of emission system you should be fine.

if you got a lot of extra money get the Cummings and chance it .... 2012 and 2013 Detroit have some problems but nowhere near as much as the Cummings or pacar and a lot less expensive. ... I have a 2012 and get the filter cleaned out every year and run 70 and very little idling and don't have much trouble and nothing too expensive. ... always take it to the dealer for def issues. .. I wasn't really crazy about a freightliner but sure glad I went that way ..... my neighbor got a 2012 Pete and a Pacar but 20000 into the Def system. .... my mechanic at freightliner says 2014 and newer Detroits haven't had much of any def issues at all ... Petes not worth the money anyways they used to be a nice truck but pacar cheapened them up
driverdriver Thanks this. -
Every single truck with a Cummins ISX in our fleet since 2012 has needed an inframe by 300,000 miles.
Every Volvo with a D16 has needed injectors annually or sooner.
Every Freightliner or Western Star with a DD15 or DD16 has not had any engine work at all. Other than a few oil leaks and the odd DEF pump.
Well, one DD15 did blow up, but the guy had it deleted and tuned up, lasted about five weeks.“Doc”, KB3MMX, PermanentTourist and 4 others Thank this.
