I made a hard decision. I am going to Swift to do my requisite 6 months after 3 years off. England didn't work (see post). I have 18 yrs.+ experience. Doubles,triples,Haz-Mat, but I have been off for 3 years.
I need a job, so please no barbs here! I am only trying to get back to work. I lost my home and my family after 40 years. Been staying with friends, and living like a rat in a trap.
I heard a few things about the physical, but I also know there are those who seem to get off on neg sh**t.
I need a complete and accurate description of the physical. I am NOT worried about the drug screen. I just need to know how complete it is, if they have you undress, what types of hell they put you through, and what they are looking for. I heard they have you lift 75 lbs 3x with a heart monitor and blood pressure cuff on>????? Hmmmm.. I pulled a muscle this week and am debating putting off Orientation due to the 75 lbs ????
Need accurate and truthful (well as truthful as it can get sometimes) information, and no lowly comments ( only constructive ones) as I know the rap sheet they have. Please be as accurate and descriptive as you can. It will help me immensely!! Also, how many of those that can actually lift the 75lbs?? and how many get sent home because of it????
I get on the bus 2morrow A.M. No shilly shallying!!
Thanks!![]()

The medical physical is a standard DOT physical. It seems your question is more about what they call the Work Well Physical. The format may be a little different at different places but I will give you the basic description.
1. They ask a few medical questions and take your bp. As long as it is in legal range, they will let you proceed with the test.
2. They will put a heart monitor (wristwatch type device). They want t make sure tat your heart rate does not go above a certain level. If it does they have you rest until it gets back into a safe range. The formula is 220-your age X 95%.
3. There are two weight levels - 75 lbs for dry van and 85 for flatbed. You choose. If you pass the flatbed you are automatically qualified for van.
4. First lift is floor to waist height. 3 lifts at 40 lbs; 3 lifts at 50 lbs; 3 lifts at either 75 or 85 lbs.
5. Next is waist to shoulder height (or a little higher for flatbed). Same as step 4 above.
6. Next is carrying up to the max weight for a distance of 150 feet. Same layout as above.
7. Next is being able to push at least 100 lbs which is done with a gauge device against a block.
8. Then you pull 100 lbs with the same device.
9. If going for flatbed you also have to pull down at a 45 deg angle 100 lbs.
10. Last is stepping up 26" (usually use a step ladder) three times to make sure you can get in and out of the truck.
I hope this helps you. Best of luck to you.nstar92 Thanks this. -
Answered at least 90% of the question. I have been off for three years for a 360 L1-S1 Fusion. I am released to work as of last Summer, but man I don't like to push my back like that. I have been told my fusion is stronger than my old back. I have a hard choice to make. I am not sure I can push that much weight at once ( or even step by step) I have average low BP and Heart Rate. Stupid Question, but for this fancy physical do they have you undress?? (Shirt off whatever, to check out your wonderful physique??
TX
Yeah, they did call it the "Work Well" physical. -
I am curious if they look down your throat at any time during the physical?
-
I believe the physical does require it. I have not really worried about it or been concerned to even think about what they do. I have had 9 of them and still cannot tell you what is involved.
-
I would suggest taking a lifting belt with you to the physical to protect your back. If your a 300 lb + person I seriously doubt you would be able to pass a test such as the one above unless you are an active athletic person that just happens to eat like a pig and thus keep the weight on. Anyone required to lift 75+ lbs from waist to your shoulders 3 X needs to be in #### good shape or someone that is familiar with weight training (this has to be done with only your arms unless you can do a "snatch and grab" move). However, I have seen Swift drivers that are just incredibly obese so I would would assume that they are VERY lax on the above requirements. Carrying 75-85 lb tarps 150'? No way can 2/3 of america do that. They must give you something easy to carry to do the test or nobody would pass. Carrying a tarp or carrying something with handles, even though they way the same are two VERY different things.
Good luck. I would say just go do it because there is no way in heck they actually expect their drivers to do the above. From the looks of many of their drivers they do not enforce the above.nstar92 Thanks this. -
Have you ever know someone who had sleep apnea? I had surgery several years ago and have had little problem with it since. My concern is that they will look in my throat, see that my tonsils and uvula have been removed and think that I have a history of sleep apnea. If I say that I ever had a history of sleep apnea, then I will not get the job. What is a man to do. I am healthy as anyone.
-
well with swift if you have sleep apnea you must let them know during the physical. they will tell you to go home and take a sleep test to see if you have it. if you do then you will have to get a machine and they will let you back into the school.
Baack Thanks this. -
Well, I guess I am an athletic type at 55 years of age and over 300 lbs as I passed the WorkWell with flying colors. Barely got a heart rate above 115 and i was allowed around 150. The weights are lifted and carried in a milk crate. You are fully clothed during this test. Ours was done at a physical therapy clinic. As for the weight push you can actually use your entire body and it is really a lot easier than it sounds. It is not actual weight, it is a gauge that you push against that register how much weight you would be pushing with that effort. Same for the pull. A back brace might be good if you have had surgery.
-
I had a new brace made this fall, for this purpose, but unfortunately can't get back to pick it up!
Well, if a 300-lb man can do it, I guess a 5'7" 142lb woman can at least give it her best shot! I need this job way too much to not at least try! I have found that if you are last in line the Doc gets bored, and you can slide on thru. However, I am debating whether or not I should even mention the fusion since they are not undressing us. It may be better if I do without it, creates undue prdjudice and they may look further at what I can do. I have been doing light Nautilus, but been out of pfactice for 4 months. I am giving up my room I rent to do this, so I have to pass or I am back homeless again! Thanks! Will be back later! ALso, I said from the get go all ASSUMPTIONS on Swift were not acceptable. I see a lot of FAT SNI Drivers, Trans AM Drivers, CR England Drivers. Why judge a driver by whom he works for????? Or how he looks!
Sleep Apnea soul, I believe that now they give you a machine to keep in your truck. I know CR England supports the drivers with it that way. Good Luck! They staqrted on that way back when at SNI. I went into the Team Ex Program, first team out. I liked them. But they are not hiring anymore!
