I'm new to the forum and diesel trucks, so forgive my ignorance. I just bought a 1990 Flc112 Frieghtliner farm truck with a Ntc-315 Cummins, cpl 838 engine at a retirement auction. I've never owned a diesel, and trying to learn all I can about it. I usually do my own repairs when possible. I looked on ebay for a service manual for a ntc-315 and there were non. So, what do I need and where could I get one? I need a tutorial on the engine also. I honestly don't know anything about them. I don't know history, so is there a way to test the "health", ie. need for bottom end, or top, etc. The front crank and accessory drive seals are leaking some. Are there good instructions out there on replacing those, as most service manuals will assume complete disassembly? I don't mind buying tools and manuals, just didn't seem to be seeing what I thought I needed out there, so need some help getting pointed in right direction. Thanks.

Try DIY Repair manuals, thy might have what you need for an original operators manual but as far as the motor you might call cummins with help on that.

So I checked on DIY Repair manuals, and found this
1989 Cummins Big Cam IV, New Big Cam IV & 88 Big Cam IV NT 855 Series Diesel Engines Troubleshooting & Repair Service Manual
Would this be the correct one? I was assuming it would be listed under ntc-315. Maybe thats why I'm not finding one; being too specific.
Thanks for the reply. -
Yes, that is the manual. You have a Big Cam 4 engine.

You can look on eBay or one of the online book sources
The book that I have is a Cummins NH/NT/NTA 855 shop manual. It explains all repairs to the engine including the water pump, oil cooler, disassembly of the entire engine, valve adjustments, complete engine disassembly and rebuilding, etc.
The big cam 4 engines had what they called a low-flow cooling system. You have to watch and make sure you don't have any problems with overheating. Some people do some people don't.
I think the big cam engines are the greatest of all time. They're simple to work on and don't generally require any special tools. There are plenty of parts available for them and they're not expensive engines to work on or rebuild.
If you have any questions or problems there are quite a few members on the forum that run those engines that know them inside out. I'm sure someone will be able to answer whatever questions you would have.Pbplus9 and slickWillie1980 Thank this. -

I have an NTC-444
Cummins quickserve is a good resource:

All the service parts topics are archived. You have to know what you are looking for or click each one and read it to see if it applies to your engine. Over the years part numbers change and/or Cummins discovers systems need upgrading to solve an issue. One thing I found on my truck was the air dryer needed a "make-up" line. Pretty simple to add once I figured out how the system was supposed to work and what parts I needed.
PAI Industries also has some good schematics and offers a lot of replacement parts:

I appreciate all the info guys. Gradually figuring a few things out. Glad to hear it's a decent engine, and easy to work on. A good intro to the diesel world. I haven't driven it enough to know it's oil consumption, but noticed it smokes a bit after start up until it warms up. Is that normal, or an indication the rings are going? Starts really well, at least now in summer.

Depending on the model that will be normal, though it may just need a valve and injector set.
Pbplus9 Thanks this.
