What's so bad about 1099 gigs?

Nothing at all. I do a 1099. Waitaminute, I own the truck. So I guess that means I am not an employee and my employer doesn't have to pay part of my taxes. Curses....

 

Uncle Sam. Your state. Withholdings for social security, withholdings for local taxes. More taxes than you can shake a stick at.

In short you pay it all. If you miss even one cent and the IRS feels that pain, they have absolute power to garnish your wages, stop your banking totally. And seize all incoming monies such as pension benefits, social security, refunds and even proceeds from lawsuits, inheritances etc. Until that tax bill is paid. Plus interest.

You will be entering a world in which you made that dollar. Awesome. You will find between 40 to 60 cents roughly all gone set aside right away against the pending taxes all year long.

That's 1099.

When I was young I did the 1099 thing the guy went under and died and the irs dropped the bomb on me with all the taxes for 5 years it cost me his 7.5 %plus my 7.5% plus 20% for 5 years plus 20 %penalty plus 10% interest and the o/,o I ran for well he died broke I way paying and being audited by the irs for years ,I still get letters in the mail they will hound me to th ed grace so yes do the 1099 thing get th hem off of me onto you .

 

More personal responsibility than most of us are used to owning up to. Bad enough we got to foot the bill for all their fancy toys they order from the likes of McDonnell Douglas and other leeches. Even worse when you're personally being hounded for the funds.

 

No workers comp, get hurt and your on your on, get killed your family has to get your body home.

 

Other than the fact it is in most cases illegal, less money when compared to w2 and only fly by night crap hole companies offer it to company drivers?

No vacation time. No benefits such as paid bonuses, longevity increases. Higher personal exposure risk in the case of an accident where others are hurt or killed. For the "extra money", you have to make that worth all the shortcomings that go along with it. Lot's of those carriers are shady, anyway (hence the 1099 setup). Maybe you will get paid maybe you won't. No way I would ever do contract driver work on 1099 and me not having a part in ownership of the truck. Do what you want but just don't come here 6 months from now griping you got screwed without any lube. You will get no sympathy from me.

 

Number one issue.
If you are a 1099 "employee" (Can't be, but that's what 1099's try for) then the company is out of the gate breaking the law.
What else do they break the law for in the name of money? How is maintenance? (Brakes?) How are the HOS followed? How hard does dispatch push the driver to speed as they books a too tight load? When will they actually pay the driver?
No, if the first thing the company talks about is breaking the law, what is keeping them following other 'pesky' laws they don't like?
