I spoke with a recruiter, and he stated that since I am self employed and do not issue myself a W-2 or 1099, that he needs copies of my tax returns. Is this common? Thanks.

    Mariu$ Thanks this.

Have to verify previous 10 years of employment and any gaps of unemployment so if you’re self-employed, they’re not just gonna take your word for it. I wouldn’t be happy giving them that info but I guess in your case it’s probably the only way...

    JDraw Thanks this.

I would tell them to screw themselves.

They don't need to see anything, you need to put down what you were doing with those gaps and that's it.

There is a reason why the FMCSA made this stupid regulation, it has nothing to prove you were working but working in a job that was under FMCSA regulations.

I was self employed for 3 years before I got my cdl. All I had to provide was phone numbers of people that could verify this. I gave them numbers of people at companies I did business with while self employed. And they only called one of them at my first trucking job. Never after that.
I would talk to recruiters at better companies.

I offered an affidavit or notarized letter from my CPA to verify I was employed. But, that was not good enough.

So, I ended the conversation. This is not the only company for which I applied. We will see....

This is fairly common, I always just made photocopies and then blacked out the amounts, never had problem.

They all realized that the numbers were not anyone else's business.

Question: Did you only provide first page or entire return?

I am kinda proud of my little numbers and if and when I go to apply somewhere I will gladly show the decision maker my numbers.

If you don’t issue yourself a 1099 or W-2 then how do you even have tax returns? Unless they say $0 income every year.

    x1Heavy and Woodchuck88 Thank this.
