Sorry Tuckster, I don't have enough posts on here to reply to your PM. Send me your phone number and I'll call ya.

In reply, either Landstar, CRST Malone, or Fikes. Getting my own freight would be easy enough, but getting the money would be problematical and factoring is never a good idea in my opinion.

My friend is doing okay but in this economy he either sits until a good load pops up or goes for a good rate. He has two trucks; A 99 Pete 379 and a Freightliner Century that he pays a driver 45 cpm. Pays for the fuel and repairs. He averages 3200 miles per weeks while my friend averages 35-3700 per week. He is looking at a 03 Century now.

With a deal like that(you pay for repairs) I hope you are getting 50% of what the truck pays.
I can understand you paying for whatever damage you cause, but for you to pay for whatever goes wrong with the truck, doesn't make much sense.
To many things can happen from normal wear and tear, like trans, rear ends, etc., that would bankrupt a driver. If you have to pay for everything, you better rethink your deal.

    Tuckster:

The question I have is what was you going to do if you get off the road? Your last post was wondering what a potential driver was going to do about getting loads, have you thought about doing your own load finding for your truck and who ever you put in it? If this is not what you had in mind then coming from someone with a long line of o/o in his family, I would suggest looking to lease your truck on with someone. I have found that the more specialized the loads are the better the pay. There are a lot of CDL holders, but fewer CDL holders with tanker, and other specialized endorsements.

    Good Luck!:biggrin_25519:

What does an O/O looking to build a fleet expect to clear on each additional truck assuming normal economy conditions? You small guys seem to be paying really well for your second driver, and yet I keep reading all these O/O's are barely paying themselves 30cpm.

    What gives?

I drive for someone who has two trucks, his and mine. I get 80% of the profit and he pays for all repairs, service and hotel rooms if it breaks down.

The down side is that if the truck makes no money then I make no money. The flip side is, the more it makes the more I make. I train students for the big evil Swift so turning a profit isn't so hard. I rarely run less than 2000 miles or more than 5000 per week. Thats typically $400-$2k per week. He Emails me the statement he gets from Swift every week so I see the complete breakdown every week. (insurance, fuel, loaded vs. unloaded miles, ect,...)

This setup works for me and him because it fits both of our overall plans. He is just in trucing to raise capitol to start an unrelated business and I'm saving my pennies to pay for my first truck in cash. If this was intended to be more of a permanent setup then it wouldn't work. The really great part is being able to see all the numbers every week. I now have a really good idea of what it costs to run one of these trucks and have realistic goals for the future.

When his lease is up I will have the option to make the balloon payment and the truck is mine, or I can walk away and buy a truck on my own. Either way, unless something goes REALLY wrong, either option will be very do-able and I will come out of it with a paid-for truck.

In the meantime I take very good care of the truck, partially because I may someday own the thing but also because I just can't stand to live in a filthy environment. The inside of a truck is small enough as it is and being dirty just makes it that much worse. I'm not quite as concerned about keeping the outside clean though. I wash it every 3-4 weeks, more if I've been playing on salty roads.

I make enough money right now that I've been able to pay off $10k in personal debt in the last 6 months, even though I was driving solo for 4 of those months. $6500 to go and I'm debt free. I've also managed to save up $5k why paying off all the debt. Once the debt is gone all my spare money will go to saving for my first truck. I keep my personal expenses ridiculously low ( $500 for rent, $60 for internet, $80 for phone and thats it) so I'm able to save a LOT without too much hassle.

He has been a great boss, I only hear from him twice a week. he sends me a text message every Monday saying how much he transfered into my account and an Email that day with my statement. I typically only contact him to tell him how many miles I ran that week or if there is a breakdown. I doubt I could ever be a typical company driver again and be happy, a 9-5 would be impossible. :biggrin_25519:

I'd love to hook up with an o/o that put running shoes on me versus these training wheels I'm caught up in on dedicated air freight thats so, sooo slow.

From what I'm reading, most fleet owners pay 60% of the line haul to the driver. The driver is only responsible for the fuel but also gets 100% of the FSC. With todays rates, you won't make a fortune but for those that love driving and can cut it for a year (or less if you're optomistic), it will get better.
