How do most of you accomplish this? I don't think you can use earbuds but maybe your Bluetooth.

Is there a way to connect your smartphone to the radio / stereo system in the trucks?

I'm heading to orientation next week so I don't know what the setup is in a newer truck.

So for my Iphone 6 it would be a lightning connector to a 1/8 inch connector? Or the regular Iphone cord to USB?

Yep, a Din cable will do it. Headphone out to aux in on the radio and you are set. I play Pandora through mine.

Worst case scenario for a phone without a working 3.5mm jack or a truck radio without a Bluetooth option, get a free standing, portable rechargeable speaker.

2 apps. I heart radio for talk radio. Spotify for music and some podcasts. I plug my iPhone directly into my kenworth stock radio thru the USB port on the right side. This doubles as an all day charger.
