    its a jeep cherokee.
with the recommendations of a local CB supplier, I opted to go with a Hustler FG-27 fixed mount antenna. It seems ok, not to fancy or anything so I hope it wasnt wasted money. Ive got it installed and now I need to go back and have it tuned. the coax is rg-58 I believe. Like I said its not a fancy set up. The antenna is mounted driver side opposite of the stereo antenna with the coax running through the firewall to the center console, so not too far at all.

With this Radio Ive noticed I can hear road noise as I accelerate. Im kinda wondering if another radio is a better choice, however if another unit wont provide better clarity then there is no point in wasting the money.

Again, the antenna needs to be tuned, it is grounded well. I had a few rigs that I passed and could hear them talking crystal clear, then once they pulled away I could hardly hear them at all. This seems odd with how much the radio does pick up from much farther away.

Im very new to the CB radio world, and I kinda thought Ide hear a bit more out there, but first impressions seems like CB is dying. What are truckers using these days to communicate, Hamm??? phones??
haha i guess the cb is better than nothing, but it doesnt seem like ive got much chance of contacting anyone sane, maybe the tune will change that idk. Ive only tried it as is because they said it would be ok, and they trimmed a part of the antenna before ever tuning it which seems counter intuitive unless they are darn sure thats fine, we will see. They said they stand by their work and will fix any issues or buy back anything Im not happy with.

Anyone have anyfurther recommendations on this set up.

Ive been picking up all kinds of skip on my little Midland in my little car. I have a Wilson mag mount.

CB is not dead or dying but it sure is a lot quieter than the 70's when you couldnt get a word in edgewise.

I have other thoughts but I gotta get to the fireworks before parking is gone lol

Where is the antenna mounted exactly?

Directly across the antenna of the stereo. Mounted driver side 12"+ frtom the A pillar on a mounting tab that mounts to the inner fender.

That location near the engine is susceptible to interference from things in the engine bay. Is the "road noise" you refer to an up-and-down noise that seems to follow the engine RPMs? If so, perhaps an RF choke on the coax would help.

I sometimes place a mag-mount antenna on the hood of a Jeep Wrangler, but I get no noise from the engine bay, luckily. Some ain't so.

Also, if your 12v supply is coming from a cig lighter port, that could introduce some noise that might be avoided by a direct tie to the battery.

Yes the noise largely follows RPMs, I'll look into this rf choke. I wouldn't mind cutting off the cigarette lighter power and running directly to the battery but perhaps a cheaper permanent mount Cb would be smarter for direct wiring.

yeah I'd go with a perm mount unit rather than cut the cig plug off the Midland. Seems sacrilegious

Since all my rigs are slip-seated now-you-see-'em-now-you-don't, and they are moved around like unwanted orphans, I depend on cig plugs and ports.

I've been pretty lucky with the bam-bam-thank-you-mam hookups, but then there are the exceptions...

4x4 you might try one of these before buying more radios. :

The only driving I do these days is an emergency weekend run if a guy is sick or a truck gets abandoned. Therefore any equipment I carry needs to fit well in a backpack
