Detroit Diesel 71 - 92 series fans

I had the pleasure of driving 4 different Jimmy’s, in-line 6/71, 8v71, 12v71, and the silver 8v92. The owner operator I drove for back in late 70’s loved those Jimmy’s.

 

My first logging job was a 318 with a 5&4. Sweet. Lol. Mashed on most of the other DD over the next decade. Trucker tip-At night turn off the headlights before you hit that next hill. Then it won't scare the engine.

 

Just for the fun of it and memories, I would love to get in a cracker box with 6-71. Many are so spoiled with today’s comfort, they don’t know how good they have it made to get in a new or super late model truck. Back in the day, we was giving whatever was parked and we appreciated it cuz just like today...... your driving a semi truck, a big rig 18 wheeler.
I would do it in a heartbeat to get in an early tractor. Wouldn’t even think twice about it.

 

It's a shame the 12v92 never got put in the truck market. Just think, it'd been in the 700 HP and 2000 ft-lb range right out of the factory, in the mid-70's. A victim of the fuel crisis, I imagine.

 

Back when trucking was still run by truckers instead of MBA's. It blows me away to see brand new drivers in brand new trucks, but I'm sure that makes more sense on the balance sheet than the logistics of bringing the old hands into the home terminal to swap out, especially in the OTR segments.

 

Huh? 12v92s were put in a lot of trucks.

Edit: come to think of it i am not positive of those 92s were original equipment or put in after.

 

The trucks were all 12-71s.

Freightliner powerliners was the only freightliner that had a 12v71. According to Google. I was not born until 79.

 

Wrong. All v12s in trucks were 71 series.
