Night time down grades.

    I realized sometimes at night I have a hard time identifying short downgrades. Like my truck is governed at 63MPH, I'll be running down somewhere in PA and I'll look down at my speedometer and boom 73MPH. I'm super micro managed so when I go over 70MPH it sets off a "critical event warning" and I have to hear all about it from the safety guy at the end of the month. I run strictly nights, and sometimes days. Day times I have no problems identifying these down grades. I have had 19 "critical event warnings" (overspeed) in my first month of driving. All of which happened after sunset.

    Any tips on noticing these down hills/downgrades at night?

    I'm a rookie so don't pound me ;)

    Yea I have done that also. Kind of strange sometimes the lack of warning signs. Usually if possible I shine the bright lights when it doesn't interfear with traffic. It helps sometimes especially if I am not used to the route.

    If your truck has a Smart Jake, see if they will set it up so that, if you're on the cruise, it kicks in stage 1 at 3 over the set speed

    Turn on engine brake with your cruise, it should engage at maybe 3-5mph above whatever your cruise set speed is at.

    If you aren't that far over the limit tell your company to piss off. If it's 73 in 70 just for the downhill that isn't that big of a deal.

    Say its dark out. Ask if the boss wants to do your job. And then hammer down.

    Turn off or lower all your electronic gear and listen to your engine. If you're not running against the peg then you should hear a difference. If you are running up all the way just back off a tad bit and you'll hear it.

    Tell them the governor must be set wrong. If there's no warning signs they can sneak up on you sometimes, you get dummies like me will use rolling a little faster downhill to get better mileage, the one run I do a lot I can do between .25 and .5 better a gallon and go faster, you have to know where you can pull it off though.

    And yet another reason I don't drive at night. Yes, judging gradual grades in the dark can suck.

    I will try to be gentle with my pounding. I'm assuming you are operating an automatic transmission. Since your talking about operating in mountains on cruise. I'm also assuming since it is nighttime you are also driving with music blasting or at a medium level. Ok fair enough. These events are not being caused by those downgrades. Sorry hand their being caused by your lack of sensory feedback to your engine RPMs. Your going to continue to get these things until you break that habit and pay attention to your Tach and your engine. There is no simple way to do this. In time when you get more experience with these highways you can relax a bit. Till then I highly recommend you shut off that music or see about getting into a 10 speed.
