Ya, I was just commenting on Rabbi saying to use a mag antenna on a fiberglass vehicle. Since the guy (in the video) was installing a vhf antenna, the coax was probably only 15ft long. I assume that's why he chose that spot to mount the sheet metal, so his coax could reach the radio. As far as the OP goes, I think the vertical mount isn't the problem. He just needs a NGP antenna and coax to go with it, then maybe his problem will be solved. Something like this antenna system from cb world.
LGXM2 - Firestik Firefly NGP No Ground Plane CB Antenna Kit
I've never had the need for a ngp antenna system, so I have know idea how good they work. I've only read that they are just so-so. Tensleep probably could answer that question since he has this setup on his RV already. -
Well thank you all for your help. The RV is fiberglass so all of you who suggested a whip or mag mount .... it just ain't gonna happen.
One question I asked early on was about 12 ft versus 18 ft. Put on an 18 ft coax today, on the original mount and got this reading without even tuning the antenna. Sometimes the simple solution is the best solution.skellr Thanks this. -
You may hear about NGP "no ground plane" antennas for RV's and whatever with alot of fiberglass.... That's how they work, they use a boat load of coax to make a ground plane but have a short range as a result.
What you have now with your firestik will be better, dont try a NGP, it's a trap!
You did good, don't mess with it untill it breaks. -
Ummmmm ... Firestik is NGP in this case. Not looking to talk with Spain. Only want to talk with the other folks within our traveling group. Sometimes one will get out of sight. I can hear them but they cannot hear me but will hear someone behind me. Hopefully this will improve my transmissions.

Your right, it basically is.
I just wanted to warn you of those 3' NGP deals marketed for RV's, they won't work as good as what you have now. Don't be swayed by their promises.
-
What I have now is a 4' NGP Firestik.
-
Ok, fine. Grab one of thoes 3' NGP RV antennas and get back with me. Those should be better because they made them specifically for that purpose right?
Are you trolling me? shouldn't you be on 2 meter with that? -
Firestik makes 2,3 & 4' NGP antennas for 11 meter.
-
I can suggest other places to mount that firestik.
