So, if the student lives in JacksonvilleFL and is in CasperWY with a load going to VancouverBC, decides to quit mid run and gets off the truck, the company should see about getting him transportation to the house, right? That doesn't happen in the real world.
I was in a mechanic's shop looking for some service for my sister's car. At the counter was someone who brought their car in for one of those free transmission diagnosis. Well, the shop pulled the transmission from the car and told the car owners what was wrong and how much it would cost. The car owner didn't have the money for the repairs. Would you believe that the free transmission diagnosis didn't include PUTTING THE TRANSMISSION BACK IN THE CAR? The car owner reviled and threatened and the shop told them that they will have the car towed and the car owner will just have to deal with the wrecker and storage fees.
I always recommend company drivers to TRAVEL LIGHT. I also recommend drivers to carry $1000 cash in the truck. $1000 will get you home from anywhere in North America. There are a few companies that are much worse than any mega. Slumlord companies, where some guy owns a small fleet and has his wife sitting at home micromanaging a team of drivers so tightly, that they cant idle an APU and have enough fuel to get to their next stop.
"But Six, students wont have that kind of money on them. They wont have a grand until much later, like when they get issued their own truck."
You're right. Read @Dave_in_AZ's opening post once again, it's dead on accurate. "Lest you be begging at a truckstop"

That's my point. When you're in that position, there's no time for bad.

That trainer just ended his career.
There no way any company will hire him now with trainee abandonment on his hire rite record... -
I disagree. I road with some absolute FREAKS. People gotta buck up. And I had plenty of cash. You can't let a situation dictate what happens. Especially something that has big repercussions.Feedman Thanks this.

I have never had that much money. If you had that much money why would you drive a truck?VIDEODROME, Wargames and Dave_in_AZ Thank this.

Quitting is one thing. If one chooses to quit, then he/she has to deal with those consequences. If the company decides to let you go for reasons other than maybe a dirty drug test, then they should send them home. Again, nobody knows the whole story. A trainer can't just a leave a trainee at the truck stop....that's lowdown

Didn't you offer him a ride?TripleSix, Wargames, gentleroger and 3 others Thank this.

Story is totally irrelevant.
Dude is broke. He's a dog meat trainee. You do what you gotta do for a few weeks.TripleSix Thanks this. -
He asked for nothing.
I'd have given him a shower credit.
He probably has a thread on here someplace asking about hair follicle testing, and truck abandonment.
He'll get a clue at some point in his life, or he'll wind up in jail or on the street.stwik, x1Heavy and Balakov100 Thank this.
