The best advice I can give to people about truck driver training is to do it on your own thru a private school and not a trucking company. A lot of people get grants to pay for their training it's the best route to go because you will have freedom to choose any company you want to work for at that point and you won't have to worry about being treated like your enslaved to any company.

Do some of the companies that higher students who are fresh out of school with a new CDL, & no experience require a contract to be signed for training?

yes, one may get grants, but it does not pay the FULL tuition at many schools. so what does one do, with no credit, or bad credit pay the balance, and especially if no one is willing to be a co-signer..???

the unfortunate truth is, this is the story we hear from many wannabe's.....they have no money, no means of good credit.....so they resort to company paid training.

No that's a good thing about it once you have that CDL in your hand you don't have to worry about a contract

I don't think that's necessarily true. I think Roehl charges for OJT training if you don't stay with them a certain number of miles no matter if you got your CDL on your own, so check at the companies you're applying to. Go check out the Roehl section in the company section.

Yes Roehl would be one to go to if you had no choice but absolute freedom is better then all else. If you can get it on your own by all means do so then when it comes to companies you don't owe them a #### thing you can leave and move on somewhere else if you find you don't like them hence....FREEDOM

Most don't require a contract; dozens do not require a contract.
Not every one that attends a trucking company cdl school has a bad experience. A few do, but that's common in any industry. Some people would complain if you hung them with a new rope.
It's not unlike people with a problem background and the only trucking company that will hire them is a second chance company. Nothing wrong with that either; the company is taking on big risk and all the liability if something goes wrong. Telling drivers they're better off flipping burgers is not the right answer. If someone really want to be a trucker, they will do it and depending on individual circumstances, they will get the schooling required, one way or the other. Look at it long term; if one attends a trucking company cdl school and another one decides to flip burgers, which will be better off in 12 months? The burger flipper will still be flipping burgers because that person didn't really want to be a trucker in the first place. The one that attended the trucking company school has now completed his 12 months obligation and can move on to a higher paying company.

Yes they do, and they will screw you over if they can not recover the cost. It is a form of indentured servitude.

I wonder how many we've warned about this that go and do it anyway.

Then, come and tell us how horrible it is and ask if there's a way to get out of their obligation ?

Some nerd needs to build a software program to track it for us.
