It's a predictable daily occurrence which happens every time assuming the person speaking has all his ducks in a row. I'm not saying the signals travel through the mountains but they definitely travel up and over the mountain tops and reach down to valleys on the other side. The signal is kind of like an arch.

That is absolutely stunning performance for the 11 meter band. I knew that CB had the ability to follow the earth to some degree, but I thought it was quite limited. I had no idea it could do so in such demanding circumstances and over a 30-mile distance. I know many people have had difficulties trying to get in and out of valleys with RF signals, but it sounds like you guys have mastered it! Thanks for the insight!

FWIW I talk to locals nightly from my mobile. My locals are as the crow flies, 38, 43, and 61 miles out. Granted they are on base rigs, but they’re not looking for the little guy in a mobile.

Yep, those high-and-mighty antennas servicing a base can take full advantage of the gigantic 11 meter wavelength compared to our little-and-low 7-foot antennas on a truck.
A tall base antenna looking over the trees makes for an excellent line-of-sight RF path. -
Not always true but sometimes. My mobile often hears things not heard by locals with larger base antennas. Different angles of radiation along with resonant or non-resonant feedline changes how and what you hear.Tensleep440 Thanks this.

So, it's a balance: sometimes a base antenna beats a mobile, and sometimes a mobile antenna beats a base. I'm going to respect my truck's antenna a lot more.

Never count a mobile out in RX or TX. I have to relay a bit here in NETX and I’ve worked most of the country east of the Rockies, all in a mobile with only 80 watts.

Nope, I no longer doubt the might of my four- and six-foot whip antennas on my trucks, competing mano-a-mano with the 40- and 60-foot multi-element giants at the base shacks.
I'm ready to take them on!

To the OP try this, http://downloads.cobra.com/CB/Models/MiscInfo/29antlight.pdf , I had the same thing happen to me. Know problem with Cobra straight from factory. Hope this helps.
