Took me 30 seconds to figure out my first auto. Very tricky and complicated.

    I hear you. =)

The only contribution to the topic I will make is simple.

The Automatic transmission whatever it is on a big rig must be tuned to the exact engine on that truck. You will know this when it's starting to lug down upgrade and it's time to shift and the automatic shifts properly. Up or down.

I like the autos in some ways where certain things become possible in ice and snow when if she breaks loose. (Best not to at all. But sometimes she is gonna) But at the same time I require my autos to have a manual mode for mountain work, my way. If a company refused to buy such a transmission with that option, I would not drive for them at all and they will have to make do with some newbie fresh from school instead with the costs, risks and damages incurred that first year with one.

There have been recently, people who have joined this forum writing pretty well. It takes a little longer to get through it all but it's good that the written language is still being defended and used properly in this age where someone can hammer out a twit in a few letters and call it a day.

I’m pretty sure the world record for figuring out an auto is 31 seconds, so you might be the record holder if you can verify it.

Actually I do not think it is a bad idea. Being a company driver it did not even cross my mind to get the parts and do it myself. I wonder if the TA would be willing to sell me the parts without paying them to install the stuff but that is not what this is about.

If I ever want to advance from just another average company driver to having my own truck one day I should be getting myself familiar with the truck more. Those two repairs are not complicated. Next time I get more than a ten hour break I might just start playing around with this stuff.

Sounds like a crappy Eaton automatic. The Detroit and Volo transmissions are much smarter.

I have the Detroit and it's good. 230,000 miles and no problems yet. It can skip gears and it know GPS location of hills. So it can change shift points if needed on a big hill. It can turn on the engine brake between gears. So it never miss a gear. The truck will keep brakes applied on a hill and release them the second the engine starts to pull trailer. So you never roll back.

I broke a glad hand. Had to wait two hours for a 5 minute fix. If I had one with me I would have done it. Can't get those hours back.

That was the nicest I could find. Who knew people thought so little of participation trophies.
