How's it going guys and gals? Tampa Florida o/o here. I've been owner op with Landstar for over a year and push for my own authority someday, so I have a question for those who carry more knowledge than me. Being that I live in Florida, I see quite a few driver's with not so up kept equipment. So my question, let's Pretend these guys have their own authority. Does having your own authority confirm you can ride whatever condition equipment you desire? Regardless of how old? I've seen drivers with trailers so bad I wonder how the shipper didn't reject trailer. Not talkin down on my own people, but 90% of the time it's these guys outta deep South Florida. I know the best way to obtain information is from The Source directly, but it's challenging when majority of these guys even speak English. So I thought maybe some of you kind people could help me out.
Are these guys Owner Op?

Brother it ain't just South Florida. You see that everywhere. I live in Memphis and I see that faithfully. A lot of guys that are owner ops never reinvest in their business. They take those $4000 a week or better checks and buy a bunch of material stuff. They don't always maintain their equipment, they don't ever try to upgrade, they just try to make the most money by doing the bare minimum. I've seen owner ops and even guys leased to a company that have to get talked into getting repairs done! Just the other day, I saw five internationals sitting at an impound lot next to our yard. They were repossessed. Many guys get their own authority, and they don't reinvest in themselves. Having bad equipment isn't saving money, it's just stupid.Justrucking2, REO6205, Lepton1 and 6 others Thank this.

Well I'll be dang. An I thought it was just the Florida heat making these guys silly enough to ride around with equipment like that. Thanks for the help though.

Funny how accounts initiated today all seem hell-bent on demonizing immigrants...

I'm probably about to start working for a o/o who's a 60 year old white country fella, that's leased to a company that has 40 drivers, 90% of which are Cubans. It's a family ran operation. He's been there 7 years and had nothing but great things to say about them not only as drivers, but as people. They came here with nothing and have built their operation from the ground up, one truck at a time. The owners wife was one of the little girls in one of the famous photos of a family of 4 in the 1994 Cuba raft exodus, they have the picture up in their office and the story behind it is quite interesting. The whole family drives. I have to say, while there's a bit of a language barrier, they're a successful bunch and are all very humble and welcoming. A lot more welcoming to this 6 foot 4 white boy covered in tattoos than I ever would have expected. Now I'm not sure what they say when I'm not around but I digress. lolsantpg, Brettj3876, uncleal13 and 9 others Thank this.

I understand your concern, driver. But with all due respect, stay in your lane and refrain from bringing conflict into the conversation. You clearly bypassed my point of asking the question and jumped directly to assuming I was demonizing someone.CorsairFanboy, Vic Firth, Sirscrapntruckalot and 3 others Thank this.

If shipper does not reject your trailer and DOT does not put you out of service, then nobody cares what does your equipment look like, even if everything is falling apart and is just held together with zip ties.
bryan21384, 727Guy and tallmon Thank this. -
Florida ...
You know Florida
Its a Florida thing
Having your own authority means your the boss , you can do anything you can afford to do. If you want to drive the most beat up junk imaginable then you can do it. If you want to drive $250,000.00 worth of beauty down the road you can do it , if you can afford it.727Guy Thanks this.
