As you can see by the photo the area above the rivets along the sides of the truck and the back of the truck the paint is worn down right down to the aluminum. I'm sure there's a reason for that, maybe someone out there knows.
The rest of the paint on the truck really isn't that bad. I would like to put the truck in service without painting the whole thing. So I'm trying to get some ideas about what I can do with that area.
It's a 95 Freightliner and the original paint from what I understand was Imron. I don't see how I could just paint the top panel because I'd be pretty certain with the fading that they wouldn't match. I've sprayed enough paint in my life to be able to do a nice job, but matching panels as far as I know is about overlapping and blending and those are techniques I don't really have and I would like to experiment with that on something else with less expensive paint at another time when I have more time.
So I began thinking maybe I can just paint that area up top a different color, and along with it maybe paint the fenders or just paint a stripe like a pin stripe down the side for contrast.
The contributions from members on the site have often been extremely helpful and clever. If anybody has an idea of what I could do with that area, what color to paint or the best way to do this without painting the rest of the truck that would be great. I'm also wondering if I could use a less expensive paint or whether whatever color I painted that would have to be Imron also. I'm thinking it might look funny if it was something other than Imron.
The original color of the paint is a really nice metallic blue. At some point I will repaint the whole truck. But my main concern right now is just that the truck looks neat and presentable especially from a distance so that I don't have a half primer truck going down the road.

I worked with a driver that had a similar problem. He fixed it the cheap way, but it looked really good from the ground.
He sanded the part he wanted to paint, just to rough it up, then feathered the edges so they would be smooth, then painted it black with a paint brush. He didn't sand all the paint off, just prepared it to hold a new coat of paint and feathered the edges just to have a smooth finish.
Many may laugh about me posting this, but it worked and looked good from the ground and he got off real cheap.
A black top and the rest of the truck blue would look ok. -
Black or silver would probably look pretty sharp up there.

i watch some of those car restoration shows on the Velocity channel. on Fantom Works, they rebuilt an old IH 4x4 for a vet...the roof of the hard top, was painted with the same type of material as the bed liner...very durable, comes in colors, they painted his white...looked awesome....

Both colors look good together; blue/black & blue/silver.Dino soar Thanks this. -
Two things -
Imron was very expensive then so someone had money.
I think it is a first generation dupont epoxy paint and has to be sprayed on a properly prep'd surface which brings me up to the second thing, it looks like they didn't properly prep the surface in that area (I had a car that was sprayed in Imron and the hood peeled off to the metal surface like that), so I would strip it all off, prep it right, then spray it with a good single stage paint. -
You said you are going to paint the whole truck later.
I would prep the surface for painting. Get a rattle can that is close in color.
I use- International Gloss Blue- Ace brand paint on my blue Freightliner for those dings and Gawd dangs.
Or go with black on top. I think that would look, ok, well at least it would be better than what you have and cheap.
Good luck and show us a picture when you finish. Maybe you will give me a good idea. -
Strip paint down to bare aluminum and polish the top. With black painting gonna be too hot inside in summer.

There's a guy in our town who did the entire exterior of his F250 in a custom red Rhino liner. It sounds crazy, but truck looks good and you can't tear it up. He takes it out to Terlingua and Mexuco and does four wheel drive stuff in it and never worries about scrapes, scratches etc.buddyd157 Thanks this.
