hi everyone. I’m Sara. I haven’t been hired anywhere yet, still looking at companies that will pay for my cdl. Mostly hoping for Roehl I guess. I’m just looking for any tips or places to go. I was a mostly stay at home mom but my kids are all grown now and looking for a good job! This seems like an ideal adventure. I would appreciate any tips!

Try not to rush your decision. Lots of options today and it takes time to do due diligence in research and trying to figure out how you want to begin. Don’t focus on long term goals you think you may have. Take it step by step in 6 month increments as you get a sense of what’s what and get a better idea what may seem a better fit long term for you or if there even is long term possibilities for you in trucking.

rather pay for your own cdl, go to a better company that offer tuition reimbursement than be stuck in a contract with a bad company. is better to have options in my opinion

Speaking from experience. All the megas CDL schools are going to do is teach you to pass your CDL. Nothing else. You’ll normally only get enough time in the truck to barely pass the skills portion and the road portion of your test. The company that hires you then will allegedly train you. They do this by sending you with a trainer to teach you how to drive. I say allegedly because the quality of trainers is all over the place. These are not truck driving schools. At that point you owe them around $4-$5000 and if you complete a year working for them they forgive that debt.

If you can afford to go to a smaller school near you it can be less money in the long run, but you have to pay upfront. The smaller schools that do the same basic CDL training seem to be about $1500.

If you go the smaller school way there are then a lot of hiring options.

Once you have your CDL it will take normally +150 hours behind the wheel with a trainer to go solo. Then you get paid at the bottom rate. $.25 to $.50 per mile. Average gross pay for a normal driver seems to be between $700-$1000 gross per week.

    Yes, that's right!
Sara, where is your location? We need to know the hiring area you live in.

I am completely inexperience so take my opinion how you want, but here it it!

I would suggest getting your CDL on your own. I am also brand new in this industry and I was considering taking the mega route where they will teach you enough to get your CDL, then you are a slave to them for 1+ years, or owe them money when you leave. Also, it seems the Mega's dont really pay too well. They promise you the world and I have talked to drivers that got wrapped up with them, and they all say to steer clear!

I opted to get my CDL through a local school. As of last Friday I now have a class A, but more importantly, I have OPTIONS!!! I have already been in contact with a few reputable small companies and have narrowed it down to 2 companies, both of which offer much better wages than any of the mega's would. One is a local construction company running trick-axle, the other is a regional company.

What ever your decision, best of luck to ya!!!
