My friend owns a 2012 Peterbilt with a Paccar MX13 engine, epa10 gen 1 emission system. The check engine light stays on after He dowes a regen and Ahe’s worried about the derate. Sometimes it also starts smoking under hood.
He thinks front suspension, trans has been notchy since he bought it, Was told the problems he has are inherent to the design of the engine. This particular engine uses an individual pump over each injector, and the pressures are never consistent, so the difference in fuel contribution causes some cylinders to work harder than others. This leads to extra carbon buildup that gets trapped in and on sensors in the emission after treat system. He’s replaced just about every sensor at least four times, two harnesses, the particulate filter has been out and cleaned at least 7 times that he knows of. The DEF filter and doser have been cleaned/replaced several times, and maintenance intervals within specified requirements. There’s no doubt that he’s going to have to head into a shop. He said The filter light is back on again, and he's currently doing another parked regent, five total for today. Maybe a clogged filter that isn’t Regening properly. oh and that regen just failed.
Regen for 5th time today & failed

Had pretty much the same motor.
Spent 10's of thounsands , Kw finally threw their hand up and said sorry we don't know what's wrong.
If I remember correctly he became part of a law suit ( class action)
Against KW/PACCAR.
Hasn't posted in a really long time.KB3MMX, Cat sdp, mhyn and 1 other person Thank this. -

This sounds like a classic case of neglect of preventative maintenance that maybe even extends back before the current owner. You cant ignore the warnings however frequent. You have and active fault inhibiting regens or the regeneration process is not completing correctly, most likely for multiple reasons. Get the truck in to a qualified shop that knows the product. Explain your issues in detail is your best shot in getting the truck back in order. Even then it may take a few trips back to get all the bugs out. How deep will you have to go? Anybodies guess at this point.

Try an EGR Tuneup, may help. Sounds like sever carbon packing. Seriously neglected motor. You own one, better learn how to maintain it. A dealer will not do these things, and in most cases will have no answers, but they can install a new turbo for you.
Coconuts Thanks this. -
Notice I said qualified SHOP.......? There are tons of parts replacers across our great country independents and dealers alike. Fact is alot of issues can been intermittent in nature. This causes confusion for most owners and drivers due to the fact that most times that same stupid light keeps coming on.......must be the same problem right? Wrong........only the person diagnosing knows the truth in the repair results. Just a shame when the truth is not relayed to the customer. A good shop will make their best effort at correcting the problem and a good customer will be understanding when things dont always go right in the process. It's a relationship with give and take from both sides. Only good relationships yield good results in the end for hard to find problems.Coconuts, Justrucking2, AModelCat and 2 others Thank this.
