I used to, it was the only way to have it customized to your specific hardware. I miss the old days of doing everything yourself. These days of point and click apps have taken all the fun out of computers.

I do. I had to when I started because the distros I tried didn't include the graphics driver needed in their configuration. The kitchen sink was there, but not that one thing. :/

You looking for something to do? That will eat alot of time researching what the options do and if you need really them or not.

Arch is a good choice. They have a great community and are a "jack of all trades" with the option of using source and binary packages.

If you want to do something specific then Arch probably has a wiki page in it, or maybe Gentoo.

A lot more people use them then talk about it.

People can point out all the bells an whistles that others OS's provide but people go with the brands their TAUGHT are the best. Apple and PCs. To the average computer user Linux is a character from Charlie Brown. An Unix is a subdivision of UPS.

I use windows. An Apple, an Unix, an Linux....But then...I also need to run all four for testing/checking of stuff I get in. Easier to have a couple setup already vs having to every time I need to test/check something.

Far as old people an computer repair...I crackup at the things I get asked to fix at times. Usually something silly an simple like a required update for something. Or they forgot their email password.

Old people are awesome. Well most of them. The ones who complain about the old days an such can go sit on another bench. I want #####ing an complaining about everything I just go online.

Debian Unstable user, here. My preferred desktop environment is Xfce, but I've been curious to try a tiling window manager like i3, someday. Although I've tinkered w/ many distros, the evolution of my main distro has followed a path something like:

Ubuntu --> Arch --> Xubuntu --> Crunchbang (really miss that distro. R.I.P.) --> Debian Testing --> Debian Sid

Back in the days when I didn't have any gray hair, I did have some experience w/ BSD Unix and Solaris.

I use it exclusively. I have for a long while now. Started playing with it about 2003, got rid of Windows all together about 2010. I don't play the games anymore, so maybe that makes it a little easier for me.

I was pushed over the edge by the constant problems Win would cause average users like my family that were not computer geek wannabes like me. It was always trying to install some garbage anti virus or something and inevitably my sister would click on it and I would have to go fix it after it completely bogged the PC down so much it took 10 minutes just to boot.

I use it for running the business when I'm out in truck, evince for PDF, LibreOffice for spreadsheets and Docs, xsane to scan in paperwork and send it off. I use an HP ENVY 5640 printer/scanner in the truck, it works flawlessly with Linux.

I just run a very old Dell D630 laptop with Slackware 14.2 and OpenSuse Tumbleweed dual boot.
