Hi guys
I'm looking at getting my class 1 drivers license in Canada (that's what they call it in Quebec, anyway)
I'm planning on taking a truck driving school locally that has 16 hrs-24 hrs of on road training (depending on the package you buy) before I would even get my license.
Someone recently told me that trucking companies won't hire you unless you have taken an extra educational driving course (from what I gather similar to a high school or university course). They call it a course from a "Road Transport Training Center". I'm guessing it's just a course about the theory of trucks, nothing to do with actual road training.
In your guys' experience, is one of these extra dilpoma's necessary to get a job with a trucking company for a new driver? I wouldn't be surprised if it is, just never heard about it before.
I know Ontario just implemented a law saying that it's necessary to take one of those courses to even GET a class A (class A/1 same thing), but from what I read in Quebec that's still not required. Here's the requirements from their website:

On another important note: I have type 1 diabetes (insulin usage). I've read on this forum that in the USA it's a nightmare to get all the exemptions etc necessary to get the license, but what about in Canada? My doctor will have no problem signing for me as I have very good control (I see her every 6 months), but I'm not sure how that works out with companies hiring or getting the license...
I'm not even really looking to be hired by a company (engineer by trade). I just want to get my class 1/CDL to add to my repertoire and it's a possibility in the future if I ever want to change careers.
Thanks!

That is only applicable if he's driving in the U.S.
Here is a link to all the Canadian National Safety Code (NSC) Standards. Medical Standards are in Standard 6; diabetes is Chapter 7. -
I see what he said now. Thanks.

Did you get your class 1 and if you did the 16hrs driving schools did you pass the 1st time?
It's a little late but now with driver shortages if you can operate safely and professional any company will hire you. -
It’s becoming the sad truth unfortunately... I’ve only been trucking 8 years and it’s gone downhill so much in that short amount of time..

Sorry I am late for this, but did you got your class 1? I got my 2 month ago and I am diabetic type 1 too... Did you have issue with the f... SAAQ?
