ATF. I poked my sniffer in there and gave it a wiff. I know some use motor oil and some use hydraulic fluid. I see there was a big debate on that very subject.

Today it came time to see what my labor produced. Filled both filters and pumped the primer about fourty times. The batteries were all charged up and I nervously cranked it over. It took a bit, but it fired up and ran smooth right from the start!
Now the bad news. I know the oil pump idles at 40 psi, but do not know how many gallons per hour it squirts out, but it is a bunch! The day that I dressed the new head, I missed one plug on the front of the head. Right behind the front structure backing plate.
So I started to take off some of the hardware, as all I need to do is lift the head ,screw the plug in and install a new head gasket.
A very painful lesson, but at least nothing was damaged, other than my pride.

Dang it anyways. Well at least nothing got harmed but just more work involved. We all make mistakes but be proud of yourself for taking on this big task. You'll have it up and running soon. Good luck.

I have most of the parts off already. I'll just need to wait until Monday to pick up a head gasket and put it back together. The right way this time! It still was a great project for me. I learned a lot about my engine and made a bunch of friends along the way!
It sure did sound nice for the short time it ran and I shut it down. I hope to have it running on, or by Tuesday.

Not the first time that has happened. All that got hurt was the pride.

The fellow mechanics in my shop always love to joke around with guys when they rebuild an engine. Most times when you start it the engine starts knocking but all it is is some guy tapping the frame rail with a hammer in time to the engine.

Sooo the one day I rebuild a 871 cummins. Fire it up, purrs like a kitten. Paul jumps up on the passenger step and starts waving his arms to shut the engine off. Well im alot smarter then that, engine sounds perfect, hes trying to wind me up. So to call his bluff i rev it up! Then he really starts waving his arms. Maybe something is wrong, so I shut it off.
Turns out I left the turbo oil feed line off! Drained 10l oil out in seconds. Bad part is I was parked next to the work order bins. All the work orders and computers had a nice mess of oil over them.
    :(
    #### happens. No harm no foul. Cant screw anything up if you never do anything!

Ya,agree with old man.You have a Chore ahead of you, but,if you know how to do it right, you'll save a lot of cash and be confident..."that it's Right". That's worth a lot.

IT'S RUNNIN'!! And yes, it is purring like a kitten. I just got back from a ride to start the break-in procedure. I will not have the weight to break it in, so I will revert back to what my father taught me. Speed up to 60 mph, back off until 35 mph, then stand on it again. I repeated that for about 45 minutes. The dashboard said everything was fine. I will dump the water out tomorrow and fill with antifreeze. And I cannot thank you guys enough for all of the help you gave me. The project was fun, I learned a lot and now I can get the buffer out and put a little shine on the ol' Pete!!
