How's it going fellow drivers? I'm only 2 years into the owner op game, so I have a question for those who have been around the block longer than I have. What do you guys prefer, brand new or used? Advantages and disadvantages for both? Currently I have a 2012 Peterbilt 587. I purchased it used in 2016. Don't get me wrong, I love my truck, but all this DEF/DPF mess is ugghh!! Plus, I just wanna experience that " long hood, stacks on the side of my ride " feeling. Haha! Yeah, you can tell I'm still a youngster. So I tried to run away from DEF to a 2005 Kenworth W9, but was shot down after being told it couldn't be financed due to having over 1 million miles and the age. Truck is only $30,000. Plus Lord only knows how much longer some of these Landstar agents will allow trucks under 2008 to handle their freight. I'm a bit timid to even ask a dealership how much of down payment is required on a brand new truck. YIKES!! Help me out, guys and gals.
    Thanks!!

Those things are just as much as a brand new truck, aren't they? No DEF is a major advantage

Nothing wrong with being a youngster. Most of us here never grew up.:bootyshake: ( take that, DOT) I had older trucks, but I did all my own wrenching. Depends what you do. For example, I simply loved my old '72 Pete 359( in avatar photo) , and it was cool , all right, but I had no business taking that truck down back alley's of Chicago (with manual steering) That truck should have been rolling down I-80 in the left lane. I'd still go with an older truck today, but be advised, you aren't the only one that wants to get around the regs, and old trucks command a premium price today. A glider would be one way, but a lot of tinkerin', and there's plenty of older trucks out there. I see them all the time out here in Colorado. The other day, I saw a guy with an older long wheelbase Ford LTL 9000. I'm sure it had some big motor for the hills, and looked really sharp. I just couldn't justify spending the money on a new truck, in such a fickle business like trucking.

I highly doubt that. A pre emissions yellow motor and long hood is the only way to go.

Yeah I like my new truck too. It has a whopping 413000 km on it now. If it lives to 2.5 million like my old one did (still going) without major issues I won't change my story. No major issues so far. Knock on wood.

The next one will be a glider. With a yellow motor.

Oh, an oil change on this new beast is 500 and change. Old truck was 350 or so. New one has more filters; and I can't find them for less than my mechanic sells them to me for. I don't buy into the long oil service intervals cummins recommends. 25,000 km or so, not more than 30, and it is changed. I don't care that it stays gold for the first 15,000. And isn't black as hell when I do change it. Whatever. Cheap insurance.
