I'm not sure what all it means but here's a link that might help.

It's a high dollar mug shot ID with a computer chip in it.

Dont forget the background check, fingerprinting and bio-metric scan of your index finger...
I guess there is a slight discount if you have Hazmat endorsement because the background check has already been done by the TSA...
I have my TWIC card now but didnt get a discount when I applied for Hazmat endorsement background check 2 weeks ago... its the same #### agency that does the checking...TSA! They said the checks were the same but they havent streamlined a system between TWIC and the state DMVs that issue hazmat... "hopefully in the future that service will be provided" -
I think it is 30 bucks. I have all kinds of security clearances. Was not thrilled with another finger printing. At least they don't use ink anymore.
-
Yeah basically the twic cards are used for clearance in the ports which they think will somehow stop terrorism from getting into ports or secure shippers. Its just a card with a magnetic stripe and a computer strip in it that holds all your information on that card so you can get faster into the ports. Seems like another way to gouge the drivers of their money. Just debating on getting it cause ive never been to a port just heard that some shippers might be going to twic access at the guard shacks.
-
no, it's a good thing. terrorists will never figure out how to fake a twic card.
i showed up for my twic appt. 30 min early this morning only to find out that they moved an hour away six weeks ago.... and they don't have a phone yet. -
April 1st is the date that you must have the card to enter ports, chemical plants and alot of HazMat co. to get a load. The idea is spreading to major co. so the card will be asked for more widely later in the year.
It is a good idea to get the card and you can deduct it off of your taxes as an exspense also. -
I too think it's just another tax on the driver, however, it's law. I applied for mine earlier this week, on Tuesday, received an email on Thursday saying my card had been issued and mailed. I missed a couple of pretty good coast to coast runs this week because I didn't have my card in hand yet. My bad. Tax or not, it costs me money not to have it.

Mailed! how on earth did you manage that....? We have to go back and pick the card up at the same place we applied for the card and we have to have our fingerprints scanned to make sure that the same person is picking up the card.....
-
Maybe ment that it was notifying that the card had arrived at the TWIC location.
From what I did, the card has to be activated when you go to pick it up. Took less than 10 minutes. They do the biometric scan of your index again and have you choose and enter an 8 digit pin number twice. Meanwhile the card is inserted into the machine to put all that info on the chip.
They couldnt find mine card at first... someone had filed it under my first name... The lady was worried too, they had verification it had arrived and that it had been accounted for, and if it had been lost by them or given to the wrong person she indicated there would have been some real trouble on her end.
