Right on, who gives a ####? The grade in question is at the yard, what's the rush? There was a similar grade at this one particular quarry I used to go quite frequently that was steep as hell. Some went up it faster, some went up it slower, and all I did was pick the gear I wanted to go up in before I go to the grade, then went on up in that gear. Not fast, not slow, just steady. Worked every time. No one is going to give you a reward for getting up there the fastest. As long as you're making it up there safely then screw what anyone else thinks.

Well, IDK about that. The Mack 6 speed I drove, you almost HAD to use the Jake because the gears were so far apart. For professionals only,,

Mines an FLD with a Eaton 9 speed so it's pretty gapy. Not much bigger gaps than a 10 speed.

Yeah, the Mack dropped the R's really quick, almost as fast as you could move the stick. On multi speed transmissions, I never needed the jake, as the gears were close enough, if I was going that slow, and double clutching didn't work, I'd just sit there and wait it out.Oldironfan Thanks this.

going up against a 10 to 15 is no joke. You are going to wind up in a gear somewhere in low range where you aint going to speed up anymore and it will be too dangerous to come out and try for a lower one. You aint gonna hit it. You definitely need to shift quicker. Double-clutching is really only there to make for timing. The gears on a truck trans are designed to be come out of one gear, the engine drop 600 rpms’s And have it drop into the next gear. Whether you single clutch, double-clutch, or no clutch, as long as you drop 600 rpm’s and put it into the next gear at that moment, you’re good to go. As mentioned previously, shift it like you’re made at it. I had an old R Model Mack that when fully loaded, and trying to upshift going up any grade, I had to shift that trans faster that drag-racing a car. Never any time to double-clutch. In that time, I’d be at a dead stop.

I like to watch those white volvos run up the grade in the passing lane just to stall out along me or just behind me. I drop it a half gear and give them some room to get behind me. They get to pass me on the down hill side.

Is the op driving for Smith transport in Raoring springs , PA??
Shift up at 1700,
Shift down at 1200.
If your a 10 speed. But if going up hill get to proper gear that you know will pull it before hand.
Until you can float gears.
