Insurance carriers charge a higher rate for certain commodities if you haul them regularly. If you have a reefer and you haul a lot of fresh produce or ice cream, you will probably pay more for insurance because the chances are higher that you will file a claim. Just as I regularly haul alcoholic beverages and I pay a higher rate for my insurance because bottles often break. Your insurance agent probably set up your policy with the least expensive load type.

Hi I was an Insurance agent for years, wrote Truckers Insurance and my husband is a driver. When your agent filled out the companies Application for your policy, it would of asked what you haul, how many miles you haul and if your in state or if you leave the state. Your Certificate Of Insurance should show what your insured to haul. A lot of companies do ask for them, I was faxing them to my clients shippers all day long. Insurance cert just shows you have insurance. There could/can be all kinds of product not covered under the cargo. Just as there can be a mileage radius under the liability. None of that will show on the cert. Read the policy under exceptions.

As an agent I ALWAYS included the type of products insured to haul, under the Description of Operations. And yes wichris is right but if you have a good agent, they should of went over the policy with you section by section so you'd know what you are covered for and what your not, so that any changes needing to be made can be made asap. So that your coverage protects you under any possibility!

You're right, my point being that if he has a good agent, then they should of went over the application with him so they had all the correct information to cover him for all possibilities in his operation. So glad you understand your policy so well, you must have a very good agent!

My point Is that having seen thousands of certs, it's a rare case that one will show any exclusions.

You don’t trust your insurance agent?? Have you read your policy? The exclusions are very clear. Further more if you don’t trust them do you think they will pay a claim? You get what you pay for. And you loose everything by not being covered.
