I am wondering if there is a way to get authority and mc number without insurance? The reason I ask is I really don't want to be paying for overhead and insurance with equipment just sitting while I am waiting the 3-6 weeks for my rights process.

Also I do not exactly understand IRP, I am from Missouri. To my understanding you pay for tag on your base state (Missouri) and for the states you will run through. Considering I am just starting and getting my feet wet, I will be going through load boards and brokers, therefore I do not know exactly what states I will be traveling. If I get a load with a deadline and do not have that state on my IRP card is there a way to instantly add it to not hold up a run?

I am having trouble understand the difference between irp and ucr? Is it the same?

You can get mc# and wait till after 3 wk protest period. (If still applicable ) I’m not sure how long they give you to put ins on file it’s at least 4 wks or more. I had it in place for 3 wks while I waited. As I recall I later found out this was not nessesary. Double check my memory is cloudy. As far as IRP used to be a hassle to add states basically had to fill out whole new page and fax and wait. From what I’ve been told by Mi. IRP you no longer have to do that , simply run where you want then report miles when you renew, as your paying for previous year anyway. Makes it a lot easier. Only had a couple problems with brokers due to being new. Basically they don’t really seem to care. Unless it’s changed. Nothing to worry about

You can apply online and get # almost immediately. They will explain status and amount of time you have to get ins in place till # is forfeited

IRP now lists all states and Canadian Providences so no worries there. The only thing that could keep you from being able to take a load into another state would be if it were a state with special permit requirements such as New Mexico (weight distance) or New York (NY HUT).

Authority, not a problem. You can apply for your US DOT and MC number before obtaining insurance, however your authority will not show active until after your insurance has been filed. You can wait for most of the 21 day protest period before having your insurance filed, however know that there may still be a delay in the time from when your insurance carrier files and the FMCSA grants your authority. You can not book or haul a load legally until your authority shows active and you have received your letter from FMCSA.

You have 90 days from the date you file for authority to have insurance on file or you forfeit your application fee and need to start all over.

IRP is International Registration Plan, meaning your base plate (registration) for your tractor.

UCR is Unified Carrier Registration, a fee paid to all states for no real reason at all. It began as a way for states to know what motor carriers had active insurance but now is simply a money grab but still legally required to be paid and current.

IFTA is the International Fuel Tax Agreement, another must have credential. This is a set of decals that show you have a motor fuels tax account and an agreement to pay the proper amount of fuel tax to each state you have operated in. It covers all participating states, so once you have it you are good in most states.

Is ucr paid by the miles driven in each state or just a flat fee and your covered for all states?

    Same question for irp -
