I have driving experience (Military) with larger trucks and 18 wheelers back in the 80-90's. More recently (2012-2018) I have experience with a dually with 35-40 flatbed trailers hauling military equipment as a military contractor for a military unit. Unfortunately none of this required a CDL.
Now I have actually gone through and taken a CDL course and acquired my CDL-A along with HAZMAT and Tanker endorsements as well as a TWIC card. In addition I have my own authority and am fully compliant.

Question: How do I get or what is the best way to get work? It seems that even with my own authority brokers are asking for 30-90 or even 180 days with an active MC before they will throw me work.

    Any tips or suggestions

I can't speak for the rest of the brokerage community, but we're fine with new entrants. I know there are other brokers that are, as well - what we look at are at a carrier's SMS scores, primarily, to determine eligibility. There's other stuff, but that's our most common carrier disqualification. I know there are more than a few others out there that do the same.

That being said, what sort of equipment are you running? That'll help folks to give you advice on what you can do differently.

I have a RAM 3500 with a BigTex 22GN HD rated for a 15,500 lb cargo. Active insurance, ELD, DOT & MC, Insured for anything except HAZMAT and Steel (CDL has a HAZMAT endorsement but Ins company would not insure those types of loads)

Plenty of Brokers & shippers out there that will work with new entrants, there are some that won't. It will just take some calling around to figure it out. Soon enough you'll be past any probationary period that some may have. Main thing is to make sure whoever you work with has good credit and solid payment history.

As for your equipment you'll have to market yourself to fit a specific need with your hotshot setup. Not everyone has hot shot freight but there are enough that do, you just have to do the leg work to find them.

Got it. I do a fair amount of work with hotshots - doesn't seem like they're hurting for work, either. I've got a few guys who call me when they're in certain areas we're working on that I can usually squirrel them up a load, be it from me or a coworker.
