Looks like some parts of the country are giving some leeway on the building codes.

#### Hurricane proof. The Carribean and Bahamas could use those. For what it cost to rebuild there just buy a container pre finished in the states and stack them
Than build a decorative facade than can blow away every 10 years
I have been thru a Few of them.mjd4277 Thanks this. -
The critical problem there is shipping, especially for the smaller islands. Aside from shipping, you really need to make sure the foundation is solid as the container is just as likely to sink over time into soft ground, especially with flooding and accompanying ground saturation.
Aside from that, these make perfect units for island living. -
Here’s the one I’m working on on the Big Island. 20ft will be a finished tiny home, 20ft will be a “garage” area.tommymonza, Swiss Mountain Dog and NYCNick Thank this. -
That looks awesome! Tell us more! What did you do for the foundation? How come you decided to frame it out completely? What did your local zoning authority have to say about it?
Thanks! -
The foundation is just pier blocks, I’ll try and find a pic. I wanted good insulation because I’ve talked to people here who didn’t frame theirs out and they seem to deal with mold a lot. We (property owner and myself) didn’t have to worry about zoning.NYCNick Thanks this.

I have seen some photos of some very handsome looking homes built from containers. I've had some thoughts rattle around in my head about doing this as well. I have been to countries where people cannot get mortgages. They build their houses piece-by-piece when they get a spare a buck or three. This would seem a greay way for them to get housing.
I am thinking it would take a very user-friendly housing housing code inspector to make this a reality in the US.Long FLD Thanks this. -

There's a guy (little bit crazy) near Terlingua, Texas who is building a home with the 40 foot containers. He took 4 of them and set them up on the corners and built the rest of the walls between each container. Did a huge greenhouse type roof over the entire thing. It's a huge square with a massive open courtyard inside anchored by the containers. One is a kitchen, one is a den/office and the other two are single bedrooms with private baths.
