Take 2 weeks off, then come back to work and then quit, just kidding, 2 weeks.

I did that . A company had me stuck at a truckstop waiting for me to do a trailer swap and kept lying about how far out it was . After I got home I asked them when I could take my vacation . They said "Anytime" . I said "O.K. , the next 2 weeks . " Got my vacation approval and gave 2 weeks notice . But how many newbies stay with a carrier long enough to earn vacation ?

I refuse to give them the chance to screw me. If I decide to quit I will do it at my HOME terminal which I have arrived to for a planned hometime. Then I will tell them I want to quit and ask if they would like me to finish 2 weeks. If I liked them, otherwise if they were butts the relationship is an at will employee/employer relantionship. If they wanted to can me I'd get no notice.

Werner I will state did the best job of firing us then I ever expected. They got us home, told us to go to terminal, and then gave us the bad news. Hell the dispatcher seemed very sad by it to we got along real good. He said 'this doesn't mean that your career at Werner is over, its just the economy and we have to let go of drivers with service violations, you are free to reapply in 90 days or I'd advise you to wait till the economy is a bit better." Poor guy. They rented us a car to go home and get my car, so we could clean out the truck.

I still miss them... still trying to find a job too /sigh.

It has always been my opinion to give a resonable notice, 2 weeks or more. I have at times become unhappy for whatever reason and found it necessary to move on. I think its just fair and ethical. I have always done this and have a good resume, one that would allow me to return to any of my previous employers and return to work if a position were available. Legalities aside, with no regaurd to whatever your application contract might have stated. I would rather leave on a good basis having done a good job for my employer and with the highest degree of integrity.

You're right about that. They never give notice when they fire people. But my company did not let any driver drive any longer when they gave notice but the company did pay the last two weeks pay. The reasoning behind letting a driver go right there was so they wouldn't cause any problems from not paying attention. They could have a spill or a mix and it wouldn't be a big deal if you were leaving. So home you'd go with two weeks full pay. It's customary to give two weeks.

I've only quit 3 jobs in my life, and all of them were trucking (go figure)

The first one I gave my two weeks and they sent me home that day because they said people were killing their pets and putting them in the fridge, peeing all over the mattresses and so on but I left on good terms and could go back.

The second I knew their idea of two weeks was route you to the furthest yard from your home and tell you to get out (had several first hand reports of this including one from the safety guy) so I took hometime, cleaned my truck out and quit.

The last one I gave two weeks and apologized to the yard manager and thanked him for the opportunity to work for him and told him if he was EVER in charge of it all again to call me and I would be back the next day. Then I told the area manager to have relations with himself with a retractable police baton.

I made it one of the two weeks with them but the safety issues got so bad I just left and didn't finish up the two weeks. I was unhappy to end it that way because my yard manager was great but the regional guy was a walking safety/DOT/labor violation and I couldn't be a part of it anymore.

So I guess what I am trying to say is it all depends on the situation.

I would consider the company and also the industry in which you work, in the run of the mill over the road company, no advance notice is required, as long as you are not under dispatch, and as long as you return your equipment to its appropriate location in good repair and clean inside, I would also say that if the company has gone the extra mile for you, you should for them!
