Trying to hire a diesel mechanic, it seems like there are none out there. Are less guys getting into the trade these days?

They want to live easy, workless and get paid more with little or no investment. There are some exceptions to this but not many. Where are you located?
-
Everybody listens to the idiots telling them to go to college and work smarter not harder, any work that requires use of your hands is completely scorned by most people anymore. Don't be afraid to hire someone who's not had any trade school type training but has been actually working on them for a few years.Rideandrepair, Opendeckin and Dave_in_AZ Thank this.

Except their F phone. They sure use that well.Rideandrepair Thanks this.

Well I can't say much about that, I'm about as bad that way anymore as about anybody.Rideandrepair and Dave_in_AZ Thank this.

Some younger mechanics I worked with would be on their phones as soon as the supervisor turned away then ##### when they got caught. Decent good techs are hard to find. I use the word tech asbwe do allotter than just guess and throw parts at the truck.
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
I donr bring my #### to somebody who calls themself a "tech," just something about sounds expensive and overrated.Rideandrepair Thanks this.

They are like truck drivers. The good ones have a job, you have to go headhunting and steal them away from their employers
Rideandrepair, Slowpoke KW, AModelCat and 2 others Thank this. -
Almost all old fart mechanics are useless if you have to deal with newer engine. What they can do is only replace the part what is fell off .
Many of them never heard about manufacturer repair manual. And won't listen or read.
Been there, seen it.

I know high school dropout mechanics who can fix anything short of machining if they have access to the right software, I know a guy who's a wizard on a new laser alignment machine and has never been to anything but a few day classes here and there as far as I know, I know a guy who has been working the same job working on farm implements since he was 12 or 13. I'll take a self taught mechanic over some Yahoo whose spent the last two years in school any day.Rideandrepair Thanks this.
