No, just move the 5th wheel back further. Moving the trailer kingpin back takes more weight off the steer axle.

    tommymonza Thanks this.

That WS is also carrying more total of the engines weight straddling over the steer like that.

Bean Jr. and tommymonza Thank this.

Well that is my original train of thought. That would make sense.

So what is the purpose of the setback front axle.

It rides like crap because you are sitting on the front axle and feel every bump and steering correction. Kinda like driving vans.

Setback axle generally puts more weight on the steer axle. In applications where trucks are paid by weight you want to maximize the axle weights. Depending on the truck setup it might not be possible to get max legal weight with a set forward long hood.

Also gives a better turning radius.

I can only speak for what I know and I've never spent any time around highway trucks. All heavy duty vocational spec stuff so I honestly can't give an accurate answer for why highway tractors have them.

No, they don't. There are very few set forward trucks anymore. 389, 579SFFA, which are uncommon, W900, 9900 International, and that's about it except for some vocational trucks.

Yea got call from premium truck sales dallas location they all over the country I asked him he said I'm gona have to ask my engineers ? And get back to you when did he said 99% come with setback axles one should have round front bumper and the other kind strigh from front . Then I tried searching bumper with setback axles for cascadia and volvo and some online part shops specify set back for sale and some charts showing bumpers from different yers but still I couldn't figure it out.
So I guess that's how it is .

This is why Volvos are bad.
